A Man and His Chalk

A couple of months ago I found a little package deal on craigslist. Guy was selling his Schon Ltd, with Schon shaft and a matching pre-cat 314 shaft, and 2 other random shafts, in a 2x4 buffalo Instroke case. The Schon shaft had never been played and everything else was pretty much in mint condition. Along with a whole slew of accessories, McMagic sandpaper, Ultimate Tip Tool, Tip-Pik, etc. Extra tips. I mean a ton of stuff. Novelty pool themed bookends. The guy quit playing a few years ago and his stuff had just been sitting around. Anyway, included were a couple pieces of pre-flag Master chalk, one blue and one green. I was almost as happy about the chalk as I was about the cue (almost, but not quite). I hadn't known there was “flag” and “pre-flag” until I read about it on here. But after I read about it, I'd always keep my eyes open at pool halls to see if they had some. What I'm trying to say is I was real happy I found the chalk and considered it good fortune to have stumbled upon it. I was treating it real good, never wasting any. I chalked my tip “...like a broad puttin' on lipsick,” as suggested by Fats and made sure the chalk's cube wore evenly, so there was no giant abyss dug into the chalk. I decided to use the green first, and took it to the pool hall with me when I went (I usually play on my 8-footer at home). I'd always liked the green chalk and I was happy to finally have the pre-flag variety because it's, you know, better:shrug:. Well, I left it at the pool hall yesterday after playing a couple sets of one pocket. About half way home I realized that I'd forgotten it and thought for a second about turning around to get it, but I was like f*** it that's too much work. Then I started thinking about calling the bartender (I know her well) and asking her to rescue my chalk and secure its safety for me. I know she woulda done it. But I said f*** it to that too and now I'm down to one piece. This is the end of my sad story.

In case it makes you feel better, the manufacturer supposedly swears that there was no change to the formula.

That said, when a chalk cube picks up moisture, it can make it play really bad. So that could be one possible explanation for the difference people sometimes report.

I have a newer case of "flag" and about 30 pieces of "pre-flag" Masters blue and there is a definite difference in color between the two.

I'm avoiding the issue by using only Blue Diamond!!!

Hmm... assuming they are telling the truth about not changing their formula, I wonder if maybe they are using the same recipe but the dye has somehow changed. Could they be getting the dyes from a 3rd party perhaps?

Otherwise, I haven't got a clue as to how long it would take a cube of chalk to reach moisture equilibrium after moving it to a new environment.

I suppose if anyone wanted to give this a more objective test, they should probably bake the samples in the oven to remove all excess moisture from each cube.

I don't think it would be a fair comparison otherwise, because differences in where they are stored could cause moisture differences. And I would imagine that moisture differences could cause a slight color difference as well.

Hmmm. All I have is pre-flag Masters. Maybe I'll pick up some new and see if I can tell any difference.

I'm avoiding Blue Diamond by looking at my checkbook!!!

I needed some chalk recently so I grabbed a box of 12 from this local place that sells a pretty wide assortment of sporting goods. Imagine my surprise when I opened the box and it was the coveted pre-flag chalk. I should have suspected something because there was no shortage of dust on the box.

I guess I must be a banger because I can't tell the difference between the pre-flag and flag chalk.

I guess I must be as well. While I can tell a difference between different brands, I've never noticed a difference between the flag/no flag masters.
