Acme thread ?

Title says it all, I want to know a little bit more about Acme thread concerning joint pins. What's the difference between normal joint pin and Acme ? Any benefits ? Which cuemakers use the Acme thread ? Why is it called Acme thread; don't necessarily want a full word etymology, just a brief explanation will do fine

Rolled thread such as the pins you normally see
examples, 3/8 X 10 and 5/16 X 14, round edges.
Standard acme (Squared edges) thread you might have seen in a cue
Joe Gold, Joss west early cues 5/16 X 14 acme
Mike Gulyassy 3/8 X 10 standard today (acme)
