Adding screw on extension

I was wondering what it would take to add a screw on extension to an existing butt. Does the extension screw into a threaded weight bolt? I guess the extension goes over the bumper? Can you order the parts or is it only custom made? My cue has a weight bolt installed. Will the extension hardware change the balance point or is it just a threaded weight bolt that is weight adjustable?

Sorry for the basic questions, but I have never seen one in person. Any info would help.

Thanks!

I found this on the Schmelke site. You can order a kit and have a cue maker install. Has anyone installed one of these? Or would it be better to just custom make it yourself?

It says:
An Extension Pro should be fitted by a cue maker for best results. The Extension Pro (US Patented D444,519 and Patent #5749788) can be install on your cue at our factory or by your local cue smith. Your local cue smith needs a 11/16" drill bit, a 3/4" drill bit and a #10 NC tap for the project.

screw on extention

Schmelke has the US patent, Mezz does the same type overseas. You are screwing into a special bumper. I have done the Mezz and it worked
very well. You can't get the Mezz in US anymore, but I'd expect the
Schmelke to work the same. Not sure who did it first. I believe you have to remove the existing weight bolt for the new style bumper. On the mezz it was a screw in bumper. I'd call Schmelke and they'll be glad to explain it.

I've done it a couple of times for Chris Bartram's cues. I used a South West type of bumper, drilled a small hole through it and then on the back side of the bumper I enlarged the hole and inserted a short aluminum bushing so that the hole would be remain open. I then installed a short aluminum weight bolt that I drilled and tapped 10/24. I then made the handle out of maple and shaped it's nose to fit around the bumper and fit the rear of the butt cap. I then epoxied in a piece of 10/24 all thread and kept trimming it shorter until it only needed about 1 3/4 or 2 turns to become snug.

I have made a few extensions that go in between the shaft and the butt. Yes, you gotta take the cue apart, put the little extension piece on, and screw everything back together. So, it's a little bit cumbersome. However, you gotta weight that against how many times you'd use the extension and whatever work would be needed to alter the bottom of the cue to accept the Schmelke-type extension. Just another route to go.
