Try this..

Could be you're clenching (grabbing) your cue in anticipation of the power, twisting it to the right. A lot of guys do this. Try less power, more smooth, and a wrist snap. It's not power, it's technique. Maintain an even grip pressure. Make sure you're hitting the cueball low enough: put the 9-ball on the table, stripe horizontal, chalk up good, and shoot it with your draw. The chalk mark from your tip should be on the bottom edge of the yellow stripe. Practice your draw up and down the middle of the table with just the cue ball to get it your stroke straight. Should go 3 1/2 to 4 rails. Within a diamond of the middle on the last lap isn't that bad. It's not that hard to draw back to the end rail on a 9' table with the object ball at the first diamond and the cue ball at the 5th or 6th diamond with the right technique. I was stuck at the 5th diamond for a long time. The difference was the wrist snap.

One sure fire way to straighten out a stroke that I know of. Put the cueball on the foot spot. Shoot directly up the table with a stroke just hard enough to bring the cueball back to where you shot from. Follow through, and let your cue stay in the follow through position. The cueball should hit the tip of your cue.

Try this with a middle hit. Then follow. Then for the tough shot...draw. Applying draw will magnify any off-center hit when you do this drill. Then try increasing the power of the stroke.

Just keep doing this drill. Do it every time you go out to shoot. Even if only for 5 or 10 minutes. You'll be able to assess your follow-through, and whether you're really hitting center ball.

Eye-dominance is a myth. Stroke trainer is not necessary. There are no shortcuts. No miracle cures. You have to shoot thousands of shots. Even gifted players practice. The important thing is that YOU practice, and do it honestly and seriously. THis has been said here and other places, many times. Learn to love drills and playing by yourself for hours.

I noticed though that you said this happens during your power draw. You are probably twisting your wrist. The best way to cure this is to use something like the stroketrainer. Gremlin says this is a piece of junk, but IMO Gremlin likes to shoot off his mouth a lot. I doubt if he can even shoot pool.

I am by no means an expert player, so you may want to take my advice with a grain of salt. But it is my advice and you are welcome to try it.

Gook luck, WW

Hahaha. How do you know how well Gremlin plays? I bet he is pretty good.

In the vast majority of cases people put unwanted english on the cue ball because of a fault in their mechanics. In the majority of cases righthanded people apply unwanted right side and left handed people visa versa. In some cases(rare) eye dominance can be a factor.Tony Robles(pro) as mentioned in an earlier post claims to have that problem and has made adjustments.

I really like the emphasis you put on doing drills and practising alone.I spend at least 15 hours a week doing drills and I am getting stronger and stronger. Most of the guys in my pool hall never practice and they just play. Because of this most of them have platued and aren't getting any better.Ilove doing drills and I find it very relaxing. I also love winning and I'm doing more of that now than ever.I have a home made stroke fixer and it helps for sure, however , without practising hard ,doing drills, the stroke fixer will only take you so far.

For some other good straight stroke drills go to this website:

thanks all your posts. it turns out the problem was eye dominance. i tended to favor the right side of the cb on every shot i guess cuz im left eye dominat, it was just real pronounced when i drew hard...i started keeping the cue in line with my chin and now i can find center ball much easier and it doesnt seem to effect my pocketing at all.
thx

I have been struggling with your EXACT problem and I found that my problem was due to a careless set up/ stance which caused my natural swing/stroke to move in an arch when I was attempting power draw. I corrected the stance, and my problem is virtually solved!

Something to think about

According to "Pleasures of Small Motions" by Bob, Ph.D. Fancher, eye dominance is not a factor in shooting pool. I don't recall his arguement off the top of my head. I'm sure someone here does though. Anyway...not interested in an eye-dominance battle! :) Just wanted to explain why I made the statement that eye-dominance is a myth.

My unwanted English on shots come from an outside-in stroke, basically, i am shooting accross the CB when I get it.
