age of the shaft and playability

Hi all, I would like to know about the shaft. Does the age of the wood and the density of the wood reflect to the playability of the shaft? Why?. I'm looking for a good custom shaft. I tried same custom shafts but I feel thet are too light. Is the shaft take a bit weight with an Ivory ferrule. I think so but how much?
Thanks everyone explain me more about shafts. I play in Italy from 16 een years now but about 2 years ago I'm interesting on custom cues but the shaft sometimes is a problem.

Can someone help me on this dubt? Because a friend told me that Black Boar shaft has up to 100 years old and I cannot believe it.
