aiming question

How do you aim using the "lights"? I sometimes use the shadow when the OB is between the side pockets.

I've never heard of this.

It sounds like a risky habit to get into, as there would be a lot of variation from table to table due to the distance of the light from the table, the table size, type of light, number of bulbs, wattage, ambient lighting, just to name a few variables.

The best lighting systems, like the Diamond lights direct the light straight down over the entire table, leaving very minimal shadows anywhere on the table.

I suppose if you had a table at home you could come up with a few aiming tricks using shadows and known angles, but it would play hell with your game when you tried to use it at the at the PH.

yes. but like everything else, you have to tweak your aim because the lighting will cahnge from room to room.

Thanks CM and Bruin. That's about what I thought. I couldn't find a way to make it work for me either. The reflection of the lights on the ball moves when you move. I use the shadow on the OB for reference sometimes, when it's between the side pockets, but after determining the contact point, just like I would use the markings on the ball.

I overheard Grady Mathews refer to this and I've heard it other places as well. I don't like to think that I am misssing a trick that might save a tough situation.

Dear Jerry, using the lights is the corner stone of one of the aiming systems taught in the Power source pool school. It is called the POL system, points of light. It would be very hard if not impossible to describe this on this board. I would need too much space, no body wants to read a long article, and I would have to publish several pool table diagrams for you to understand it. You can get it 3 ways.
(1) Pay for it, book in the power source pool school and learn it.
(2) Go into our web site, I am publishing instructional articles
there. Soon I will write this article & post it for you and it's
free and won't cost you anything.
(3) You can call me on the phone and I can briefly try and explain
it to you, this is also free.

That's interesting Larry, I look forward to reading the article on your website. Now that you mention it, I have heard the "points of light" term used somewhere before, but I can't recall where...

Thanks for clarifying.

I have ran around the country teaching this now for a long time, soon it gets around. I taught it to Bluewolf who posts on this board, she picked it up, because it involves seeing things, drawing things in your mind, and that was something she was very adept at doing.

Thanks Larry!!! It just is seeing and not thinking IMO. And I do appreciate your showing this to me.

Thank you Fast Larry. I'll be looking for your article as well. I'll give you a call if it's not clear to me. Thanks again!
