Aiming systems = totems ?

Sooo, today I rebooted my game. The reboot happened because I figured out I line up better with my right eye. I figured I'd try creating a personal aiming system during the beginning of this reboot. I took bits and pieces, some fractional and some shaft aiming. On most shots not any particular angles other than extremely thin cut shots I lined up center to edge and used the ferrule left/center/right depending on wanted spin or lack there of. I set up drills and made a lot of shots, mainly using center ball hit or close too(no pro pool player I am, yoda). Any way the system seemed nice, and worked ok being day one.

I don't consider my aiming thing a system, it's my way of finding what my body, mind and eyes do when I am enjoying a game of pocket billiards.

Do you guys think we in some ways worship aiming systems like totems, finding courage, strength and peace in something else other than ourselves. Nothing negative about aiming systems but they might be taking credit when YOU should get credited.

No. Because what you did is use a systematic approach. That was the difference and not a faith-based thing. It wasn't you sitting in the lotus position for 30 minutes chanting a mantra about how you can play better and then you played better.

It was about you changing the actual mechanics of what you are doing kind of like installing a better fuel injection to get more power out of your car. If you suddenly had more power and speed then you would rightly credit it to the new part.

Same thing with aiming systems. If you go from inconsistent in shot making to consistent and all you changed was the way you approach the shot then give the new approach the proper credit.

I take a little bit from everywhere...... Thin cuts I use a bridge length based pivot system..... 0-30 degrees I use the SEE system.... Shots in between I may use the spot on the table method or a fractional Hand system........

They are not totems... merely methods of systematically seeing and repeating certain shots with better percentages than just winging it........

Learn as many systems/methods as you can an keep the ones that work on certain shots for you... Building your own shot repertoire is a personal thing and I think the more you approach it systematically the better you will like your results.....

What is the "fractional Hand system"?
I havn't heard of that one.

.

It's similar to the original Hal Houle fractional system... 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, full....

If you hold your hand out and spread your hand open as wide as possible you can point the pinky along the line of a full hit between the object ball and cue ball....

In my case if I hover my hand over over the object ball with the pinky on line and the hand spread the ring, middle, and pointer finger give me a close approximation to the 3/4, 1/2 and 1/4 ball angles.... It's a rough system but I like it better than blind guessing.....

I use it mainly as a double or triple check when I am a little unsure of the angle I am seeing......
