RONNIE Alcano’s hot streak continued as he claimed the 4th Sun.Star Superbalita Class A crown after a 15-13 win over Dennis Orcullo at the SM City-Cebu Trade Hall last night.
In the Class B championship, 17-year-old Bebien Jabien defeated Romeo Silvano, 11-5. Trailing 10-5, Silvano gave away the win after scratching on the nine ball.
Other winners were Rechelyn dela Cruz, who defeated Eva Alcuirez, 7-2, to rule the Women’s division; Marvin Gentapa, who beat Jose Pepe Cardeño to win the High School championship; and Ted Trapilla, who outlasted Dionel Raga to top the Elementary division.
P100,000
Alcano, the reigning San Miguel Asian 9-Ball Tour Manila Leg winner, got the P100,000 top purse, while Orcullo settled for the runner-up prize of P50,000.
Earlier, Alcano trashed last year’s runner-up, Lee Van Corteza, 13-4, while the 2003 champion Orcullo defeated inaugural champion Antonio “Gaga” Gabica, 13-10, in the semifinals of the event co-presented by Touch Mobile.
The semifinals and finals will be aired on IBC-13 through Rocketman Production next week.
With alternate breaks used in the finals, no player was able to pull away as they kept within a rack of each other.
Missed chance
Trailing at 10-9, Orcullo had a chance to level after Alcano scratched on his break but bungled his approach on the eight, giving Alcano the rack at 11-9.
Alcano got on the hill in the 25th rack, 14-11, before Orcullo managed to take the next two racks to make it a one-rack game, 14-13.
Alcano came up dry on his break, but there was no shot on the one for Orcullo. After a few minutes checking and rechecking the table, Orcullo opted for the unconventional jump using the bridge as the cue ball was in the middle of the table.
After a miss, things looked well for Alcano. He sank the one and had good position on the two. But a collision with the nine forced him to a bank on the three, which he also missed, giving Orcullo the table again.
Then the bizaare happened – Orcullo missed the three. Alcano promptly played safety on the three and Orcullo’s one-rail escape missed, paving the way for Alcano’s win.
