Altering a cheap cue design ?

Hi everyone, is it possible to alter the design of a cue ? Any kinda mask or tape ? I got the below cue as a gift and would like to remove the skulls on the forearm. Don't really like flashy styles. haha

The design is under the finish. Unless you want to just spray paint over the finish, you'd have to sand it down to bare wood and re-finish it. Will probably cost as much as a new cheap stick to get all that done.
