Amateur 14.1 tournaments

Does anyone else host 14.1 tournaments like Red Shoes? And if not, why not?

I'm being a little selfish in this question. I made a bargain with my girlfriend that I would skip the NAPA national tournament in exchange for going someplace in the spring or summer to play 14.1. Red Shoes is not out of the question but she's not excited about spending the day alone in Chicago while I play pool so I told her I would look for other options.

Matthew....I can understand why someone would not want to spend time in "CHICAGO". No shopping, restaurants, movies, theater (stage play), museums, water front, tall buildings, night life or any other points of interest. Why when "we" are not playing pool....all there is to do is to go down to the barber shop and watch them give hair cuts.

I do not agree with or defend her lack of enthusiasm; in the interest of domestic bliss, I at least need to look for alternatives. I just need to spend some time finding points of interest that would appeal to her (shopping isn't one of them.)

Chicago is about 13 hours from us by car, while NYC and Philly are 4 and Boston is somewhere in between 4 and 13. She views this as a trip "just to play pool" so 13 hours in a car or anything by plane is a hard-sell. (I also have a bad back so 13 hours in a car is a no-go anyway. I would take the train (still long but at least I can get up and move around) or plane.)

Also, it would just be nice to know that other places have tournaments.

In the interest of "domestic bliss"....I "withdraw" my response....Doesn't Amsterdam Billiards have some kind of ongoing 14.1 competition?? Plus if all else fails....why don't you "axe" your local room operator to put on a "Straight Pool Tournament".....Let's face it.....after the players meeting (and blind draw....you can use a deck of regular playing cards for that), 14.1 Tournaments "run" themselves. Straight pool players are generally a pretty sedate bunch. I would be glad to help you with any you guys might need to get it going. Anyhow keep "her" happy...."good" girlfriends are almost as hard to find as a "good" cue (especially if the "butt" on either one is just the right size!).

The better thing about cues though, they don't complain if you have more than one in your bag or trade in an old one for a newer model.

Thanks! I really appreciate the offer. Unfortunately, we don't have a pool room in Ithaca. The colleges have them but organizing and holding a tournament at one of them would be a very steep, uphill battle unless I just wanted to straight-up reserve the room for an hourly rate (not gonna happen.)

Too far for you but here in Sturtavant Wi. at Boomers, now renamed The Green Room by new owner, We have a regular Sunday afternoon 14.1 round robin that has been running for about 6 years now. Length of session of course depends on number of players. We just finished a session and a new one will start 1-6-13. It looks as though we may have 14 players this time. I really enjoy this and would like to see it continue. It is open to anyone.

Sounds like you're talking about a 14.1 league, which amounts to a round-robin tournament playing one or two matches per week until you've played everyone once or twice. So with 14 players, it might last 13 weeks if you play one match per week. I think leagues like that can be found in quite a few places. But actual 1-day or 2-day 14.1 tournaments (single or double elimination) seem to be pretty scarce.

[Please correct me if I'm not reading your post properly.]

Atlarge;

You are correct. It's one match per week til you have played everyone. No big money involved. We pay $8 each match. 5 for greens fees and 3 into the prize fund.

Last July Amsterdam Billiards in NYC held a qualifier tournament for the World 14.1 tournament. This was a two-day open 14.1 tournament, double-elimination, races to 100. I assume they'll have another one in 2013.
