On Monday, January 17, sixteen weeks of competition in the Amsterdam Billiards‘ Team 9-ball fall league season culminated when the final two teams faced off for the grand prize of $15,000, plus a free trip to Vegas for the 2011 BCAPL National Championships.
The champions for the Team 9-ball league would prove to be team “You Chalk Too Much”. This team has gone through a number of incarnations in the past few years since finishing 2nd in 2008, and finally broke through to take top prize, after defeating “OMGzilla” in the finals. And while everyone aimed high for the big prize, the last place finishing team “The ‘D’ List” was also awarded with a bonus $500 prize.
An unprecedented $26,000 in prize money was added to this season’s payout for the Team 9-ball League finalists… and ABC’s largest field of league teams got in the mix for a chance to cash in, as well as experience some of the most exciting team competition anywhere. The atmosphere at Amsterdam on league nights combines the team camaraderie vibe between teammates as well as between teams–making it a night that players look forward to each week. Not only in the Team 9-ball league, but many players also play on other nights for the Team 8-ball and Straight Pool leagues.
Teams are now gearing up for the kickoff of the Winter League season, which starts tonight… for players who still want to get involved, there may still be openings on teams.

Team 9 Ball Finals
The pressure was on as only two teams remained in the Team 9-ball League Playoffs. Facing off on Amsterdam’s two feature tables adjacent to the bar, plenty of other league players and bar-goers looked on as competition heated up. The two teams that met in the finals were:
YOU CHALK TOO MUCH: RAY LOZADO, DAVID PADILLA, STEVE LUW, Captain - PHIL HUR, STEVE LAY, LUIS NOVAS, and DMITRY ROZENFELD
OMGzilla: Captain - ALAN CHAN, NICHOLAS CHAN, TAKAO WATANABE, MAN "THE MASTER" KIN SHUM, AND TRAN TRAN
The first two matches were between Alan Chan and Steve Luw and Nicolas Chan and Luis Novas. Both matches were uneventful with one player on each table taking control of the matches. Those two players Alan and Luis went on to win their prospective matches 7-4 leaving a dead tie after the first two matches.
In the second two matches is where everything got interesting with Dmitry Rozenfeld playing Man Kin Shum and Phil Hur playing Takao Watanabe. The Phil and Takao match proceeded a lot like the first two matches with nobody really jumping out in front and staying almost tied. In fact it ended at a score of 4-3 when “You Chalk Too Much” eliminated “OMGzilla”. On the other table is where the action was taking place.
In the first rack, after running out from the 5 ball, Dmitry left himself a tough shot on the 9 ball. With the cue ball behind the head string and the 9 ball only about 8 inches off the foot rail and both balls almost parallel to each other, Dmitry cut the 9 ball across the table and into the corner pocket and never looked back after that. He went up 5-0 before Man was able to put a couple of games together and make the score 5-2. Then Dmitry got to the table in the next 2 games and run out from where he entered the game to win the match for “You Chalk Too Much”.

Team 8 ball Finals
Team 8-ball started with 34 teams for the season and came down to 2 teams that have been in the league a long time. Some roster changes over the years but some of the players have been in the league almost 10 years. These matches are decided by games and the team that wins the most games (regardless of how many matches they win) is declared the winner.
MYOB won their division (Tuesday Early) and won two matches to make it to the finals and play for the title of Fall 2010 Team 8-ball Champions.
Superfly Snooker finished 2nd in their division (Tuesday Late) and had 3 match wins to make it to the finals and play for the title of Fall 2010 Team 8-ball Champions.
MYOB: James Killen (captain), Geoff James, Robin Jane Solvang, Chris Frankli
and Jeanne Domurat. Superfly Snooker: Chris Calarco (captain), Mike Sabat, Matt Poland, Rob Calarco and John Calarco.
The first match finished in the final match was Rob Calarco 4, Chris Franklin 3. Superfly Snooker is up one game.
Match #2 to finish was Chris Calarco 7, Geoff James 2. Superfly Snooker is up 6 games.
Match #3 to finish was Mike Sabat 7, James Killen 4. Superfly Snooker is up 9 games.
This put the match out of reach for MYOB to win and the last match was stopped at John Calarco 4, Jeanne Domurat 2. Superfly Snooker won the title in impressive fashion. Chris Calarco decided to put himself in for the finals after losing his match in the quarter and semi-finals but he won by a big 7-2 margin in the finals to help secure the victory for his team. I suppose he feels pretty good about his decision now.

Straight Pool Finals
This season’s final is what the Monday league should be about. A couple of the foot soldiers slugging it out for the top 2 prizes. No Thurstons or Mika Cinnamens, just a couple of regular guys elevated to the spotlight playing in the finals. A chance to bask in the sun. This last final pitted Robert Darden, a seasoned veteran, against a determined youngster, Chris Root.
While nobody was running a lot of balls the players never stopped gritting their teeth and the game came down to the wire with Chris coming within a dozen before giving Robert the chance to close out the game. We can expect to see good things in the future from both these players.
