Andy Gilbert cue

I just received an Andy Gilbert cue that I bought from a friend of mine. My friend lives in another state and all i'd seen of the cue was some pictures he sent me and his description of the cue on the telephone. I didn't doubt my friend's description of the cue, but i've never seen a Gilbert cue in my area and all I knew about them was an article I read in Inside Pool Magazine. I liked the way the cue looked in the pictures and when I received it I was really happy with the cue.

The inlays are sharp and crisp, nice trim rings through out the cue, a leather wrap that's as close to perfect as you'll find, flat faced 3/8x10 ivory joint, and shaft tapers that are very nice. When I took the cue out of the box and tried it out I was very impressed with the way the cue plays.
Check out the pictures and see what you think.

That is a beautiful Gilbert!

VAP, my guess is that a similar cue from Andy would be around $1500 +/- a couple hundred. If you want to call him and get a quote for something similar his number is 417-743-2759.

Andy's prices are amazingly low considering the work. I emailed him about a cue and it was priced half at what I was expecting. Only thing now is trying to come up with the money :(

Beautiful cue. JUst picked up a Gilbert myself in a trade! Man, these cues play well and look even better and yeah! The prices are great. Good luck with it!

I can't say what Andy would charge for a cue like this one since I bought this cue second hand. What I do know about his cues is his prices are lower than some of the more recognized named cue makers and I would rate his quality very high. If I were to guess I would say some where in the $1500 to $2000 range, but that's just my guess and you would need to call Andy to be sure of his price.

One thing that really impressed me is how well the cue plays. I think most people have to get used to a new cue when they get it, but this cue felt right almost as soon as I picked it up. I do cue repairs and it seems like a lot of cues i've owned had shaft tapers that just didn't suit me and i'd end up modifying the tapers to get them to feel right for me. The taper on the shafts that came with this Gilbert cue is great. The only thing I changed was the tips. I replaced the Lepros with Moori Slow tips.

I made a trade + cash for that cue at the DCC. Did you get it from Dave B.? Anyway the cue played really solid and i wished i hadn't sold it. If i'm not mistaken i think the weight was 18.8 to 19oz. I liked how the ringwork matched the veneers. Good luck i know your gonna enjoy it.

Very nice cue there :)

I spoke with Andy earlier this month and commissioned him to make a Szamboti-style 8-pointer but with his own personal touches. His price quote was amazing given the amount of ivory inlays which will be going into the work. He usually takes 4-6 months to deliver the final product, so I'll be going nuts in the meantime :P

He's working on a custom jump/break for me right now. It's a bit over double what a typical j/b goes for but it'll have eight points, a leather wrap and two shafts.
