Another jump cue shaft question..

I recently purchased a 3x5 cue case and in one of the tubes there was a 24 1/2" end section of a shaft.
I am thinking of trying to use it to make a jump cue.
My question is... do I need a ferrule on it?
I plan on making my own butt for it and putting a hard tip on it (maybe a water buffalo or Hard Hitter tip.
Any ideas or suggestions?
Thanks
Ron

Ferrule:: yes--the forces on the tip of a jump cue are greater than a wood shaft can handle.

XXHard is as soft a tip as I would put on a jump cue.

Was the shaft really rough cut? Those often aren’t shaft wood. If it’s what I think it is, it’s dunnage to mimic a shaft so that the cases can be imported as packaging, bypassing the harmonization codes for the case’s true function.

It doesn't appear to be varnished, but has a very smooth surface.
