Eddie's Billiards in Maple Grove, MN is closing their doors as of April 21. They have been around as long as I have been shooting and it will be sad to see them go.

I know that a lot of people blame the smoking bans in different states for the closure of pool halls, and normally I would argue that point with you citing that it is managements fault to not be evolving with the current times. In this case it was inevitable. A lot of the clientele at Eddie's were of the young crowd looking for a safe harbor to smoke their cigarettes and play their games. This is what kept Eddie's alive for years. I am not saying that this is right, but that is what their business is based off of. Since the smoking ban went in to effect 10/1/2007 here is MN all pool halls have been severely affected.

One business here or there closing their doors is not something that I will lose any sleep over. However I am noticing a change, that is at least in my area. I started going to the pool hall when I was 14 because it was a place that my friends and I could go to play games, but primarily the reason was that we could smoke cigarettes without repercussions. That is the whole reason that I started playing this game and have achieved everything I have up to this time. But what I am noticing is that there are very few young players that are becoming familiarized with the sport.

My parents used to try to shun me from going to the pool hall, knowing that there were bad influences that surrounded the area. The thing that they didn?t realize was that pool can teach you a lot of life lessons. How to be a gentleman, how to have patience, and how to have discipline. These are character traits that I will carry with me through my whole life. Now I wont say that some of those bad influences didn?t get to me once in a while, but I wouldn?t change a thing in my past.

My whole point of this rant is that there is another pool hall closing its doors, and unfortunately it is the young kids, the future of our sport that we love so much who will be the most adversely effected.
