Another pool shooting?

Saw this in the S.F. Chronicle today. Got this version of the story off of www.SFGate.com. In the Chron story it said that it happened during a pool tournament. The bar was Max's Sports lounge or something like that. The fact that he was 20 at a bar makes me think he might have been playing in it:
----------------------
The Alameda County Sheriff's Office is investigating the fatal shooting of a 20-year-old man in unincorporated Hayward Thursday night.
According to Sgt. Scott Dudek, the incident occurred at 9:05 p.m., outside of a bar in the 21000 block of Meekland Avenue, when Nicholas Bookhammer stepped outside of the establishment to smoke a cigarette and was shot multiple times at close range.

There are no suspects at this time, Dudek said, but investigators are currently interviewing witnesses who may be able to prove a description.

Anyone with information regarding this incident should contact the Alameda County Sheriff's Office at (510) 667-7721.
-----------------------

Does anybody know this guy or any other details?

Cheers,
Regas

This had nothing to do with pool. The deceased just was there to fill in for a colleague in a pool league at a local bar. Although one news channel described the place as a pool hall it is merely a bar with a bar table or two.
The latest is that the victim and perpetrator had an argument about a month ago and this might be an aftermath. I doubt if anyone in pool circles knows the gentleman. Also he was gunned down with a shotgun, one blast.
Pool will not take the blame for this one.

Tell me the guy had to leave the bar to smoke because of CA no smoking laws. I think the blame should be placed squarely where it belongs. On the anti smoking crowd.

Don't be rediculous !!!
I seriously doubt anyone in the so-called "anti smoking crowd" pulled the trigger.
The Cal anti smoking law was passed by statewide referendum in '95 and fully inplemented in '98. By now (6-plus years later) everyone is accustomed to the law and reacts with no questions or second thoughts.
By the way, Cal is only one of many states with no smoking laws.
Geeez.....

I tend to see things differently than most....problem is the press blows up stories by saying it happened outside/near a pool hall,,,might have been several other businesses close by but the pool hall is the blame (or should be the blame) in the readers eyes,,,
believe me, I know where I'm coming from....I run a gameroom (aka: pool hall),,,if shots are fired in the housing project across the street, the news reports it was outside the pool hall, if it happens one block over at the grocery store, it'll probably be blamed as starting in the pool hall,,,if it happens across town, will probably be reported as one of my pool hall patrons did the shooting,,,if it's not reported that way,
the media only says someone was shot in the 300 block of 'such & such' street...HEY, blame it on the people, tell whose house it was, name other businesses, but don't blame society's ills on the pool table,,,the pool table/pool hall is not the root of all evil !!!

Thanks for the clarification. The paper can be sketchy...and they usually have an axe to grind.

Typical for the layperson (newspaper) to call a league match a tournament.

dandy reply:
I for one do not understand why you people post this negative stuff. It does not help the sport. Do you hate your game and want to see it go away?
Most pool halls are now like bars, lots of drinking, lots of booze. How many people do you think get shot in or just out side of bars every night. Dozens, so what is the point.

Trouble with a capital "T" that rhymes with "P" that stands for pool. Can anyone remember where that phrase came from? And, according to Tony Bennett, money is the root of all evil. Can anyone help clue me, and others, why AGAIN the pool world is getting a bad image? I have a pretty good idea, but it just doesn't quite fit.

The Music Man

That phrase came from the Music Man. I can't think of the performer right now but remember watching it many years ago. It may of been Robert Preston.

It was Robert Preston in the movie, "The Music Man". Good movie just too bad it had to trash the game we all love so much.

Maybe this will help

Another shooting took place in Hayward, Ca. close to the other shooting however this one reported outside a bowling alley.(maybe they have pool tables) 14 year old shot several times but survived. Happened at 2:15 a.m. in front of the 24 hour bowling alley. Whats he doing outside of a bowling alley then. (smoking) ?? lol

Having lived in Northern California I would say Hayward and South End of Oakland are place to avoid. DAy or Night.

Shootings happen everywhere there are Guns, and people with Short Tempers. Think this shooting happening in a Pool Room was not the fault of the Pool Room, or a Gun being used in a Shooting as both Pool Room & Guns are inanimate places, and objects that need the Human Factor to do the dirty deed.

A white man, sang the first rap song. Ya got trouble:

Song: Ya Got Trouble

Harold:
Well, either you're closing your eyes
To a situation you do now wish to acknowledge
Or you are not aware of the caliber of disaster indicated
By the presence of a pool table in your community.
Ya got trouble, my friend, right here,
I say, trouble right here in River City.
Why sure I'm a billiard player,
Certainly mighty proud I say
I'm always mighty proud to say it.
I consider that the hours I spend
With a cue in my hand are golden.
Help you cultivate horse sense
And a cool head and a keen eye.
Never take and try to give
An iron-clad leave to yourself
From a three-reail billiard shot?
But just as I say,
It takes judgement, brains, and maturity to score
In a balkline game,
I say that any boob kin take
And shove a ball in a pocket.
And they call that sloth.
The first big step on the road
To the depths of deg-ra-Day--
I say, first, medicinal wine from a teaspoon,
Then beer from a bottle.
An' the next thing ya know,
Your son is playin' for money
In a pinch-back suit.
And list'nin to some big out-a-town Jasper
Hearin' him tell about horse-race gamblin'.
Not a wholesome trottin' race, no!
But a race where they set down right on the horse!
Like to see some stuck-up jockey'boy
Sittin' on Dan Patch? Make your blood boil?
Well, I should say.
Friends, lemme tell you what I mean.
Ya got one, two, three, four, five, six pockets in a table.
Pockets that mark the diff'rence
Between a gentlemen and a bum,
With a capital "B,"
And that rhymes with "P" and that stands for pool!
And all week long your River City
Youth'll be frittern away,
I say your young men'll be frittern!
Frittern away their noontime, suppertime, choretime too!
Get the ball in the pocket,
Never mind gittin' Dandelions pulled
Or the screen door patched or the beefsteak pounded.
Never mind pumpin' any water
'Til your parents are caught with the Cistern empty
On a Saturday night and that's trouble,
Oh, yes we got lots and lots a' trouble.
I'm thinkin' of the kids in the knickerbockers,
Shirt-tail young ones, peekin' in the pool
Hall window after school, look, folks!
Right here in River City.
Trouble with a capital "T"
And that rhymes with "P" and that stands for pool!
Now, I know all you folks are the right kinda parents.
I'm gonna be perfectly frank.
Would ya like to know what kinda conversation goes
On while they're loafin' around that Hall?
They're tryin' out Bevo, tryin' out cubebs,
Tryin' out Tailor Mades like Cigarette Feends!
And braggin' all about
How they're gonna cover up a tell-tale breath with Sen-Sen.
One fine night, they leave the pool hall,
Headin' for the dance at the Arm'ry!
Libertine men and Scarlet women!
And Rag-time, shameless music
That'll grab your son and your daughter
With the arms of a jungle animal instink!
Mass-staria!
Friends, the idle brain is the devil's playground!

People:
Trouble, oh we got trouble,
Right here in River City!
With a capital "T"
That rhymes with "P"
And that stands for Pool,
That stands for pool.
We've surely got trouble!
Right here in River City,
Right here!
Gotta figger out a way
To keep the young ones moral after school!
Trouble, trouble, trouble, trouble, trouble...

Harold:
Mothers of River City!
Heed the warning before it's too late!
Watch for the tell-tale sign of corruption!
The moment your son leaves the house,
Does he rebuckle his knickerbockers below the knee?
Is there a nicotine stain on his index finger?
A dime novel hidden in the corn crib?
Is he starting to memorize jokes from Capt.
Billy's Whiz Bang?
Are certain words creeping into his conversation?
Words like 'swell?"
And 'so's your old man?"
Well, if so my friends,
Ya got trouble,
Right here in River city!
With a capital "T"
And that rhymes with "P"
And that stands for Pool.
We've surely got trouble!
Right here in River City!
Remember the Maine, Plymouth Rock and the Golden Rule!
Oh, we've got trouble.
We're in terrible, terrible trouble.
That game with the fifteen numbered balls is a devil's tool!
Oh yes we got trouble, trouble, trouble!
With a "T"! Gotta rhyme it with "P"!
And that stands for Pool!!!
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

That song IMHO did more to damage and set pool back than any other thing in history. Every time some guy wanted to open up a new joint some lady sitting on the city council is remembering the lyrics, thinking If I vote for a new pool hall I will allow in the devils tool.

:D :D :D

One of my favorites. Speaking of movies, has anyone noticed that in movies, whenever someone's in a bar and gets beat up, or shot, or whatever it's always near a pool table? Sometimes in a gang banger hang out, there's a pool table too? Or the house cues are often used as weapons? I think that movies aren't helping out either.

It would be nice if everybody stopped posting the few incidents of violence in pool. I mean, there's more workplace violence in post offices than pool rooms.
Bars and nightclubs aren't pool rooms.

Well said JPB! Let the puritans hear it! Cigarette smoking and gambling are here to stay. Not everyone will grow to be a healthclub yuppie. Even among the bar crowd, apparently...

Grady,

I'm a fan of yours and all you do for pool, but I disagree with you on this. I think that in this case, there are other factors to consider:
1) If I hadn't posted it, then people here who read the Chronicle article would have assumed it was pool related, even though it turns out it wasn't.
2) I am new to this area and want to know where it's okay to go and where it isn't. I went to my neighborhood pool hall (yes, pool hall) right after moving here and had somebody threaten to shoot me because I was a "white american" (his words). The guy was not a pool player, but if I had been shot it surely would have been a black eye for pool. This wasn't a dispute or argument, I was playing by myself and never met the man before. Heck, I hadn't even talked to him that night. I'd rather learn on this forum where to go or not go than become a bad statistic for pool.

Cheers,
Regas
