APA League MVP

What are the benefits of "winning" or placing 1st or 2nd in the MVP running for APA leagues? I'm just curious...I am playing in my first APA league and I have played in 5 matches, won all 5 with 77% PA and 15.4 PPM and won my 6th match with 18 pts (which hasn't been updated on the APA site yet).

I still need 1 more match to qualify within the white skill level group...Though I think I'll be SL 6, would that move me to the black SL group? (I'd still be first there too...I am happy with how my game has progressed in this short period of time)

Congrats on shooting well!! The only benefit I can think of is that depending on your league you may qualify for an MVP Tournament that you could possibly when some money.

Well...I've never finished 1st, so I can't tell you from personal experience (finished 2nd a few times). But being #1 is a pretty good feeling, I would think.

Our league gives the MVP a plaque, a patch, and $50, as well.

You get a plaque , or atleast I did

I won a 9ball MVP and in second right now mid season for 8ball MVP.
5/5 with one rackless

Just goes by how many points you rack up, 8ball is harder need a few rackless nights minimum to get there

I only been playing apa two years and the closest I came was 2nd. Which was a little disappointing to me because I was in first the entire session and only lost 1 match. I was a 5 and played pretty much 5's and 6's all season long. The person who won 1st place started as a 3 and then went to a four and then after the last week he was raised to a 5. He never even played a match as a 5 and played pretty much other 3's all session.

I can understand the disappointment for sure... Though I have had a hard time convincing my team to let me play higher SL players. I want the challenge and pressure, they want an easier route to the win...

Thanks. I played REALLY well this past week. I played a 6 (who dropped to 5) and won 38-13. I'm still riding high on that win and eager to get back to the pool hall and practice.

I play much better when I play people who are as good or better than me.

Beat me to it!
Not directed at you but i see no need to rain on some one elses parade. A patch is recognition for an achievement ...whether it be a break and run...8 on the break...rackless...skunk or an mvp.
I have played apa for 12 years now and contrary to popular belief i have never played for patches or even a trip to vegas.

I just enjoy playing with friends in a somewhat competitive environment. After filling 2 shoe boxes with patches i have begun to give them away to team mates and have even put them back in the folder to return to the league operator.

With that said i see nothing wrong with a person finding a lil happiness getting a patch...plaque or whatever for their acheivements playing pool.

I think it's nice that the APA does things like this, regardless. I know that if I were a brand new player, looking to learn and improve when it comes to competitive league play, patches and recognition for achievements are great incentive to acquire and keep players returning to league.

That being said, I used to bowl in leagues and the USBC was running out of funding, so unless you had an achievement like getting a 300 or 800 series, you're not getting any sort of award...at least not any more where my league operates. I am sure some leagues fund their own prize pools for their members, but it's diminishing.

I have been playing since I was about 7 years old, so I'm not "new" in terms of the sport, just new to the league and format. I don't necessarily need any recognition for achievements, but it's nice to see leagues do that and I was really only curious as to what those "goals" were to get patches/plaques.

I got screwed out of the patch apparently...lol. Did get a plaque, and I think small prize money, ...and auto entry into a "Shoot Out" tournament for singles. However I think that 'Shoot Out' qualification was for the top handful of every SL, so not really a MVP specific prize. The real prize for me was breaking the reigning MVP champ's streak for the last handful of sessions. I quit CPA (APA) afterward, and he's back on top. ...with a gap on his trophy shelf...lol :)

It's funny actually... I got mine as a 7 (8 ball) and my wife is about to win one as a 2 (again, 8 ball). People can't figure out how she's managed to be so bad while married to me. Truth is, she hates playing with me. Thinks I'm judging her all the time...lol

First, congrats on the MVP, the APA handicapping system does it's job and it's pretty hard to win the MVP.

I've won it a few times and in SW Idaho we then had a "tap-out" tournament where you play super short tourneys (4 people?) with people in your skill level. If there wasn't a lot of people overall the SL groups would vary (7-8-9's or 6-7-8-9's with fewer people). Being an SL 7/9 that never bothered me but I could see how it would affect the SL 2's and 3's who now had to play with the 5's and 6's.

Either way, you could enter as many tournaments as you'd like and when you win you get a pass to the Vegas tournament and maybe a little cash when you get there. Again, this is SW Idaho and I know the different leagues are run differently so your mileage may vary.

The first year, when the new league operators were just getting started they didn't have enough players to have a full MVP tournament so they had a "Best of the Best" tournament, I think I had a 6 matches in at that point but it was open to everyone so I joined. The plaque is sitting on my shelf at home ;)

I wouldnt say i was screwed but i did not get a patch for what was my greatest achievement up to that time.

It occured during my one and only trip to vegas. First ever match at nationals and i skunked another 5. Could be considered a tainted win due to the fact it was sudden death where all balls were worth twice as many points. But nevertheless i think a 38-4 win vs anorher 5 in sudden death was quite an achievement.

Being the captain i was the one to turn the scoresheet in and i inquired about a skunk patch. The lady stated they didnt have skunk patches at nationals because no one had ever skunked another player. She said she had been working nationals 15 years and had never seen a skunk and she atarted showing the sheet to every one up on the stage lol..

I have managed to recieve a few skunk patches over the years since then.

None of those have replaced the feeling i was having at nationals though.
