APA LVQ tournament

Just curious how most APA league operators set up their LVQ tournaments. In the area I play in it has normally been a modified double elimination, if you win 3 matches you have won your spot to Vegas. With 12 to 16 teams per board and 4 teams per board advancing you have a 1 in 3 or 1 in 4 chance.

Now our new LO's want to add more teams to the qualifier. The model they are looking at would have 23 teams per board with 1 team per board advancing to Vegas. This would require you to play a minimum of 6 matches and 8 if you have a 1st round loss versus the 3 or 4 matches we currently play.

Just curious what your area does and the positives or negatives for that system.

We have 4 boards for 8 Ball, 4 for 9 ball. 16 teams (or spots) per board.
Single elimination. It all seems pretty straight forward, but it might be fun to try something different

I've played in both, and won in both. No real difference. More matches, sure. But the competition is a bit watered down at that point so there are only a few top teams battling it out.

Overall, I like the 24 team events with the energy in the room and so many tables going. It seems like they just include the final sessions regional tournament in the first round, then the teams win out to get to the bracket of teams that already won their regional. But if LO's insist on doing everything on crate paper and with a single laptop tied to the national office for sheets, then the smaller format is easier on them.

Note: In our area it goes in the following sequence:
1) Three seasons per year
2) Each season followed by regional, top 8 qualfiy for championships
3) 14 teams (three brackets of 8) play in the Championships
4) winner of each bracket of 8 goes to Vegas for Nationals

We have 36 teams split into.2 boards with modified single.elimination. Been that way since I joined 5 years ago.

We have 6 rounds. First has many byes in it. If you lose in 1st or 2nd round you go to losers bracket. Starting at 3rd round it is single elimination , so it is modified. 4th round is only losers bracket so you could play either 5 or 6 rounds all together to qualify.

We have 32 teams qualify for cities. In 9 ball 4 teams qualify for Vegas so 4 8 team boards. In 8 ball same 32 teams but there is a 5th spot so one extra team qualifies.
