I’ve often examined in contrast past champions with current heavyweights and wonder about comparative aspects. What makes me curious, is how to equitably consider factors that have changed with time. Venues, equipment, competition, rivalries, must have varying degrees in effect. I believe the progression in table quality poses many questions, now with the makers having so many choices of cloth, cushions, and commonly varying pocket size. Advancements in ball materials are probably in the mix. I recall reading about Willie carrying his own set around to different exhibitions. The flood of great cues had to be of some influence. It makes me wonder what Greenleaf might have done with a Southwest in his hands. Rivalries nowadays are played out on a worldwide stage in everyone’s living room. The increase in competition has to be relative to population, yet considering the lack of options in entertainment in early/mid 1900’s, a larger percentage of the populous might have found refuge in a local pool hall. I find the threads considering the greatest players very entertaining and though many responses are subjective, not many look at, collectively, the change of time. How would you compare ?
