Arguments over fouls.

What do you do in this situation: You are playing in a bar tournament, everyones back is turned and your opponent is talking to a buddy. You foul a ball just slightly, not moving it from its spot, just a 16th of an inch rub back and forth. If people were over you watching they still might not have noticed. You are playing all fouls.

I without thinking picked up the cueball, handed it too him, and explained to my confused opponent what i did. He then takes his ball in hand, pockets a ball and puts himself about an inch away from my ball shooting away for shape. As hes bridging my ball, he fouls it, strokes again and pockets his ball. I called the foul while he was stroking. Now here is where the question arises. He argues and claims he didn't touch the ball, after i walked up and picked it up. He then goes on to call me dishonest, still claiming he never fouled. Noone was watching again. It was a fairly obvious foul where a ball moved maybe 1/8 to 1/4 inch. What do you do here? Give him back ball in hand, shooters call? Or flip out after being honest enough to give up a ball in hand with noone looking. I am also the tournament director. I flipped out, told him there is no way that i would lie, my previous foul should be evidence of that. He still denies it calls me a cheater. I take my ball in hand, still argueing, sink a ball miss shape, miss the next shot, and give him an easy look at a runnout. He screwed it up I finished up. He wouldn't shake my hand. This shit bothered me all night, but i appologized when he left for getting pissed at him and he turned around and ignored me. Is there a better way to handle that situation? I gotta quit playing bar pool.

PS: I placed 4th and was happy. I place 1st about 8 out of 10 weeks, but last night i called the 3 best serious 'A+ - Pro' players in our are and got them to come down. I got the worst, but with these players i was only hoping for 3rd at best. 1 guy was ranked 4th in Canada on the CPBA tour 1 year in the 90's, but he hasn't played in 2 years, and the other guy is the best local shortstop A+ player, Doug Foster.

I play a lot of bar pool. And I think if it comes down to him saying he didnt foul the shooter gets the benefit of the doubt. You did the right thing in the begining but in the end not so much. Honor is hard to find in some arenas. It sounds like you had it and he didnt.

It would have bothered me to and you did the right thing by trying to set it straight before you left. It is not your fault he cheated.

I know it goes to the shooter. I also know what i saw. When guys fluke balls and say they call it, I let it go and rely on thier honesty. But in this situation, i saw what i saw, it was a foul, and I'm not gonna get ripped off for a game in a race to one. I was kinda happy i messed up after taking the ball in hand though, that makes the win Unquestionable to me. But im still pissed that someone called me dishonest and still thinks it.

Most people i see that "cheat" and wont admit to it, usually lose that match.
It's just one of those things that happen that way, they get all the bad rolls from then on out.
I've seen it so many times.
Another reason why i don't like "bar pool".

most of the places in bars, lounges, pool halls, etc, that i have seen everyone is there to drink beer first, and play pool second.

thats why i dont ever go to those places.
the atmosphere is just ripe for bad stuff to happen, and i dont mean losing a pool game either.

By no means did I mean any ill will. I know right where your coming from. I'm glad you won the game because you deserved it.

Sometimes, even when you're right, you're still wrong. You were right to call the foul on yourself. You were right to call the foul on your opponent. You were wrong to pick up the CB without the shooter's agreement. In a non-refereed event, even if you KNOW he fouled, last call is still his (you can't referee your own game, that's like kissing your sister). This sucks, I know, as I had the exact same thing happen to me in Las Vegas at the Pot O'Gold National Championships. Guy I was playing fouled, I called it, he denied fouling, even though people in the crowd were telling him he fouled, yet the TD bowed to the offensive player's right to make the call. That cost me the match, since I would've had ball in hand on the 8 for the case game, while instead he ran out, then made the 8 on the break. At the time, I was extremely pissed, but if I were in the TD's shoes, I would've had to have done the exact same thing. I finished 4th, which wasn't so bad, I can live with that, but damn, I wanted to win. As a side note, my opponent, who lost his next match to finish 3rd, was booed at the awards ceremony....

I just drop it if they insist it was not a foul, but they go onto my known "cheaters" list (in my mind).

When I play them in the future, I check every one of their racks and whenever there is a questionable shot about to be played, I ask someone else to watch.

It is not a compliment for me to check one persons racks and no one elses. And there are few players I do this with. Only 2 league players and 1 money tournament player. They don't like it one bit when I closely inspect their rack and ask other players to watch their shooting.

Thats very admirable. I would have made a bigger stink and would have done everything in my power to not have allowed that to happen, then probably jumped the guy in the back if the call went the way it did for you. This type of thing is what pisses me off most. When i KNOW beyond any doubt in my head that i am being cheated, i can't let it happen. If a guy says he calls something, or meant to call a 3 rail bank that he thought was obvious, i let it go, im not in his head. Something blatant like this though, i toss the damn rule book out the window. Give the call to a lying piece of shit 'Shooter', NEVER!
