Is it written anywhere what makes a player a 6 or 7 or 7 or 8 so on and so on. One more question I was thinking about getting back into some tournaments I was rated a 6 about 4 years ago I play about every other day for a couple of hours and in all honesty play better than I did 4 years ago. Where is the best place in town to get a honest rating. I was talking to some of my buddies that still play and they said since I have been gone for so long that I might not get a fair rating people would think I was dogging it. Thanks for your help. I don't know where to tell you to go on the west side. They have tournaments almost every night at Pappy's. I think they'll rate you there. Ask for Gene. He runs most of the tournaments there.

I agree with Jimmy that Pappys is a good place to get rated now. Also, if you prefer, I am on the ratings committee and I live on the west side. I can rate you at either Pappys or Alexanders or just about anywhere else you want to try playing at. the have free pool in the afternoons at both places and we could play for a while so as to get a more consistant rating. I am available in the afternoons or on Friday nights for the most part. Alexanders and Pappys are the two places that have the most tourneys on the west side. At Alexanders, the tournament director generally wants you to play at the top rating of the tourney (usually an 8) and then be rated after that...Pappys is pretty much the same way, unless you go early enough before the tournament to let Gene rate you. I can rate you and give you a card that both will except if you are available in the afternoon pretty much any day of the week until like 5 or so.

Send me a private message and I can give my contact number so we can get together if you are interested.

I guess these are local weekly tourneys. I’ve known that AZ has had a rating system for a while. But, what would an out-of-towner have to do to play? Does this mean, when I visit my sister (in Phoenix) and want to play in a tourney or two, that I need to get rated? Or do I automatically default to the highest rating?

It sounds as if one must pass a test of some kind to have the privilege to play (like a driver’s licenses). And I don’t mean any offense to the AZ guys, but it seems a little ridiculous to be carded before you play in a tourney. On the other hand it also seems that there are a lot of tourneys someone could play in, it would be great having tourneys every night of the week. Something my area is lacking and getting worse at all the time.

To me, part of the excitement of playing tournaments is the unknown.
