Bad spindle

I imagine that clausing. The good news is you can still get parts. The bad news is....well, to say they are pretty expensive. Those series have a problem with some bushing. I suggest having a look and asking question over at practicalmachinist.com and also calling Clausing. the guys over at that forum have rebuilt those things from the ground up and can be alot of help.
 
It is a Clausing 12.36 and on the front of it says model 5911.

I actually tried to become a member of that forum and I got rejected for some reason.

It is hard to imagine the spindle itself being bad. But the bearings are another matter. What kind of problem are you having?
 
It just looks to me like the spindle has more runout than it's supposed to. I stuck a dial indicator on it and it has about 5-7k runout.

What run-out are you referring to? Latterly, meaning the spindle can be moved back and forth lengthwise or can the chuck be moved back and forth sideways to the bed? Or are you checking a rod in the chuck and it has movement? There is a number of different run-outs and may have different repairs. Just where are you checking? on the outside of the spindle or the inside and front or back?

I stuck a dial indicator on the spindle itself after having taken off the collars attached to the left side of those Clausing Lathes. I think, actually, one of the smaller collars was on crooked and that gave me the impression it was more crooked than it really was, but still, looking down at it, it just doesn't seem right to me, I could be very wrong about this, I hope I am.......

Try chucking up on a piece of ground rod. You will want it at least 6 inches or so. Check as close to the chuck as you can and check run out. Check to see if you have a way to adjust the back of the chuck. If it is a cam lock stly say like a D1-4 then make sure the surface of the spindle nose and back of the chuck are clean. Make sure that the chuck is snuge down with a cheater bar. Then check run out. If that looks good then go to the end of the ground bar and check again. Also check by moving indicator down the bar longways with out rotating spindle to make sure the spindle and chuck is parallel to the bed of the lathe.
