my friend found an article from bob meucci regarding balance point from 2002
he discusses the ideal balance point should be around 16.5 inches from the bottom of the butt plate (+/- 0.5 inch)
and gives his resoning for this
i am not a cue maker but it is my impression most cues today are around 18-19 inches from the butt plate
what are your thoughts on the the ideal balance point and why
i did a search but did not find anything specific to this question

With a 58" cue where a player holds it is mostly a function of their height/wingspan. Shorter players(Varner,Mosconi) tended to hold it in the wrap section. Tall guys with longer arms(Buddy) usually held it on the buttsleeve somewhere. BP plays a part in cue selection but its a small one imo. Its something you adjust to very quickly when hitting a new cue.

It's my opinion that "most well known builders today generally shoot for the forward balance of something in front of the wrap area of the cue.
Balance point is one of the harder requests to accommodate and generally falls where it falls according to the builders specs.
ie....99% of mine end in the 19ish range on a 29" butt from the back end not including the bumper

if I remember correctly, hippie jimmy talked about using wingspan/height to help a player figure their ideal bp..makes sense

I generally take some weight off the back of 90% of the cues I buy. I am constantly being asked if I can take some weight out of a cue for someone or another. I heard people say a hundred times over, "It's a nice cue, but it's kinda back heavy" I was told Bob Meucci liked a cue to be "kinda back heavy" makes sense. If I'm noticing any front or back weight I will probably not care for it and adjust it until I don't actually notice anything either way. Perfect!
