Balls thrown with your hand - Aim/"stroke"?

An aside to games of pool...

...after each game of pool, players who are racking can be seen throwing the cue ball with their hand up table for the player who will be breaking.

Or sometimes they will throw the cue ball at a remaining ball up table to get it to come back down toward the rack (instead of walking around the table and getting the ball).

But many times I see the person racking throw the cue ball up table and it goes right toward the corner pocket and drops!

Or they throw the cue ball with their hand at another ball and the cue ball completely misses the ball!

I have not seen any discussion of "aiming" or "stroke" when throwing a ball with your hand...

So the question is: How should you properly throw a ball with your hand to aim properly? :)

I think Mike Massey does some neat stuff with "finger pool" but I have not seen any videos of that, just his regular trickshots. I'm sure howerver some of the other folks on here can link to something.
