_(2)_Questions about bank pool...

1) Do you shoot most of your banks with a hard classical bank pool stroke or have you been trending towards softer bank shot play? If so, why?

(my answer is below)

2) How many balls would a top player, say Efren, have to spot you in short rack banks for you to have a good chance at beating him?

(I would be inclined to bet "big" with 3 balls. If the spot were 2 I'd be much more cautious. So, maybe 2 + the break would be about right.)

Thanks,

Fred

Why I think I am hitting banks a bit softer than I used to...

After just 5 months of subscribing to Accu-stats video of the month offering, I have noticed some changes in my bank pool game.

The biggest change is that I am *not* hitting the ball as hard as I used to. My speed has come down a bunch lately and I think I am shooting better because of it.

After watching videos of greats like Eddie Taylor spanking balls hard into the hole (let's call Eddie's average speed an 8), my average banking speed was right up there with Eddies.

Lately, I have been shooting most banks at about a 6 or 7 speed.

But why?

I can come up with what I think are 3 good answers to the "Why" question;

1) Lately, I am much more balanced between offense and defense in my play. Safeties usually require more control and less speed.

2) Many 2 way shots require leaving a ball hanging in a pocket. I play for the hangers (if I miss my shot) in order to either block the pocket or to take that ball out of play.

3) I am more in tune with what the various speeds will do to my shots. If I am already hitting banks at an 8 speed, I most likely won't be going up to an 9 or 10 speed to get my variations. No, I will be hitting more shots softer with the resulting mix of speeds drawing down my average speed.
