For all you road dogs! What are the best and worst places to play the game? I live in Sacramento and feel that this is a good place but I am curious where it ranks.

huntsville alabama

has very little gamble.there are a few here me being one of them, but its brutal to live here.its tough to get and stay matched up.we do have a pool hall that one of our best players, namely robert hall, aka meridianville slim which he hates,is opening up with a partner.its gonna have like 22 diamond smarts and i think 4 9 footers diamond.he's gonna have some monthly tournaments that should kick the action up at least once a month.

I live in Sacramento also, but I would have to rate it as a below average pool town for big money games. (3 digits or higher)

Just about anywhere in the midwest or on the eastcoast there is more action available than Sacramento.

Just recently, Tony Chohan moved from Sacramento to Detroit for more action.

That doesn't mean that Sacramento doesn't have any action, there are some great players here and are willing to bet it up. Just not a 'highway' easily driven for the roadies.

cookeville

cookeville tennessee has had about as much action in it as any other city i've heard of in a while.bobby pickle has been playing everybody.

Raleigh used to be the mecca in the South for pool. Kind of dried up, now. Stakehorses left. Players quit and left. Poker begins. Next story. You might find a fifty dollar set, if they think they have two balls the best of it. There are, however about ten to fifteen players that will stretch out on a limb if the stars align and the moon is in the fifth horizon. Fuller, Robert Ray, Faircloth, Leroy, a few twenty a game one pocketers, and a few more might match up with "good" players. Not like the good ol' days when you might catch Archer, Tony Ellin, Cliff Joyner, Roger Jackson, Tony Watson, Sparky Ferrell, Brian Ezell, Mike Coltrain, Harold Dollar, Joe Root, Richie Marshall, Greg Brooks, all in the same tournament. Johnny once said "You could win the US Open before the A player tournament in Raleigh."

I can't get no Satisfaction.

Is Joe Root the guy who looks like Mick Jaggar?
Sure is. He is a hoot. I'll let him tell you his own background. Tell him Crawfish, from Raleigh, said hello. He really does look like Jagger, doesn't he? Love to talk to him. Oh well, you can't always get what you want. But if you try sometimes.....you just might find.....

Lakeland, FL is the worst city in the US for action, there is none! I don't know what happened, ten years ago there was a ton of action here! Now you have to knock someone over the head to get fifty dollar a set action. And it's not like there's no money in the poolroom, it's just filled with nits. The only action at all is on the snooker table playing 10 or 20 dollar golf(boooring). So if your looking for action in central FL, don't waste your time even slowing down around Lakeland, because there ain't two nickels to be made here! Jeremy

Chicago is hit or miss. Sometimes there is tons of action. Other times, you can't even get a game for a drink. There are just tons of pool halls in the Chicago Vicinity. Plus, the players have different game preferences. Up north, it seems to be 9 ball, on the south side, it is one pocket or banks. On rare occasion, you will see 8 ball being played other than in the bars. There are tournaments almost every day of the week all over the area.

Good luck with your search

O.K. Let's see someone top this for bad.

There USED to be halfway decent bar action around here. A few years ago I finally gave up when some guy asked me to gamble. I was hitting them good that nite, knew this guy had NO chance, so I told him "How about a dollar a game?" He then told me he didn't want to bet that much!! It cost 75¢ to play a game!
lol,thats bad.

La

LA is either hit or miss too. Of course you got the action hounds like Morro and a couple others that will step up and bet it up. Right now the action is at Hardtimes. Very tough to find a game really anywhere else. One pocket maybe in Santa Monica, but I doubt theres anything more than 50-100/game

Maybe....

Santa Monica is one-pocket heaven if you aren't into high stakes. I was in there last week and there were 6 tables going with one-pocket action and about
8 players waiting to get a good table to get into action.

(Oscar, are you into one-pocket yet.)

Lookin' for some one pocket action? Try Chris's ....

Santos has been there of late... some nice sets of 9 ball. Also Eddie Balderas drops by... Larry Schwartz... and others. Also seen some straight pool action.

They Don't Call it "Hotlanta" for Nothing!

The pools scene is great here whether your a gambler, obessed leaguer, aspiring pro or established pro. Three great rooms, many weekly tournaments and many big events that bring out all levels of play.

The only negative right now is the lack of a Women's regional tour, with the demise of SEAL. Hopefully Mike Janis and the Viking tour will fix that, there is a lot of emerging talent here.

And plenty of action...all you got to do is ask.

This is an interesting thread. I've always wondered about the related question which is not where there is the most big money action (because I'm just an average recreational player who loves pool) but about where in the country pool is most popular and where it is less so. That is, I wonder which area of the country has the most bars with tables, bar leagues, people with home tables, etc.

This might be tougher to determine without having access to actual stats (home table sales, numbers of bar leagues, etc) but I'd still be real curious.

I live in Huntsville too . . . Robert is a hell of a pool player . . . he''s won the national amateur . . . if anyone can set up a proper pool room around here, its probably him. Least we can do is go play and give him a chance to survive . . . if there's some action to go with it, then so be it.

Gpeezy . . . give me a PM . . . we should go play or practice . . . long as you spot me . . . ha :)
