Was wondering who ya'll thought is the best Canadian player is? Excluding Alex P maybe Horsfall or Potier?

ME ! LOL no just kidding.

Best player Besides Alex. well lets see. 9-ball would be Luc Salvas, Dany Hewitt or Ronnie Wiseman

Best snooker used to be Cliff thorburn but now either Roubidoux or Stevens

Best money guy? Edwin Montal

best all round is Alex but close second Ronnie or Luc

Good question, IMO the next best Canadian player after Alex would have to be Luc Salvas, he was the highest finishing Canadian at last years WPC after Alex, it was a shame he wasn't on our team at last years Border Battle. Horsfall and Potier are also former Canadian champs and play very well but they don't play in enough tournaments. I know alot of players who would argue that Danny Hewitt might be the next best player, he plays alot on the Canadian tour and shoots good. As you can see there are too many good players out there to name just one as being Canada's second best.

Forgot about Salvas, Alain is the best snooker player in North America .

I'm not to sure who the 2nd best pool player (after Alex P.) in Canada is, however, between Horfall and Potier......John is definitly NOW, the better of the two. He's world class and can beat any player in the world on any given day.

In the recent International Tournament of Champions, he beat Ralph Soquet, Earl Strickland and narrowly lost to Bustamante in a one game sudden death playoff after each player won a set each.He beat two world class players and gave Bustamante everything he could handle. John Horsfall has arrived and is to be reckoned with!!!

Robert Chaperone plays mean snooker and 9ball, he played flawlessly against Strickland at the Viking Nationals and lost on the hill, and he has won a major snooker event in the late 80's.

Ronnie Wiseman has to be one of my favorite players. He has a beautifully smooth stroke, and his style and attitude at the table is fun to watch.

Horsefall. Pottier. Martel. Montel. Hewitt. Salvas. Wiseman. White. Watson. Thornburn. Mickelson. Cullerier. I'm sure I'm missing some. On any given day, any of those guys could win. But if I had to put money on the line, it would be on Martel or Hewitt. Martel is an inspiration to watch. I've seen Dany fold, but not often.

Martel? as in Alain Martel? I don't know....i've seen the border battle challenge and he looks like he's not in any form that he was before.

I've seen him play a few times, in person. I think he's still got alot of game. But Dany's winning more tournaments.

I have attended the last four canadian championships as well as most of the pro tournaments here in Quebec (as some in Ontario) and I usually travel with Danny Hewitt to the big tournaments in the State. From what I've seen watching the other Canadian players I must definitely say that Danny has to be the best player in Canada after Alex. Actually I was just discussing this matter with Alain Martel a few weeks back and that's also what he told me. Unfortunately Danny is a very weak minded player, definitely not a fighter when the going gets tough, but his talent is so amazing that it compensates. And he is starting to fight more than he used to. I guess that's why of the 11 pro tournaments we've had since september he's won 7 of them, I guess that says it all. Everyone speaks of Salvas at the international level but you have to keep in mind that he is actually the only Canadian player doing all the tournaments abroad (he has the money to do it!). Luc is a very unpredictable player, he can play like a champion one match and then play so bad the other match you wouldn't think it's the same player. Danny's record against Luc is one sided as Danny usually beats him. In their last ten Danny probably beat him 7 times or so. The other player I would consider right now is Horsfall although on the long run Danny would definitely have the better on him. They actually did play at the Canadians this year and Danny won easily. Of course there is always Alain Martel. For the past 3 years Alain was in a descending slope, not being interested much in pool at all and playing like someone who doesn't feel like playing. But this year he's gotten his enthousiasm back and has won 2 or 3 tournaments. Still, he has a hard time with Danny and he will probably never get back to the caliber he was before. The Canadian Championship will be held this year at the Skratch West-Island, Alain's pool room, so my guess is that it should be Danny's year. But with this game you never know of course.

Hi Thierry. Were you at Kingston? I watched Dany play there, and was very dissappointed to see him basically quit his match. Seemed that once he got down on himself, it was over. I also saw him fold in one of the Pechauer tour events. I've also been a witness to him steam-rolling the field (with me being just a quick bump in the path! :) He should find a good coach.

By the way, your guy Martin promissed me half price on one of your cues! How long is the wait for an order? :)

cheers,

I feel bad not mentioning Edwin Montal seeing how he's from my hometown, congrats to Edwin on his 2nd place finish at the US bar table championships.
I would love to see Danny and Edwin match up for $$$, that would be an exciting matchup.

Left out two good ones

:D Two of the best money players I've ever seen both came from Canada,
Joe Lawrence and Frank Jonik. I staked Frank one time for $2000 a game against Raphael playing snooker and Rafael ran the first 3 racks. We were $6000 loser before Frank screwed his stick together. He came back and got the money though, and if you think that didn't take a champion's heart, I assure you it did. Frank is a good guy too, just alittle drinking problem, same with Joe Lawrence. :p

Gerald,

Ran the first 3 racks in snooker? What do you mean? I don't see how it is possible to run 3 racks in snooker before the other guy puts his cue together. I'm missing something here.

Gerald,

Just a little drinking problem is the understatement of the day on Joe L. I've seen him disrupt way too many events. He got me in Oshawa last year. He wasn't even involved in my match. He was losing to Dave Thompson if my memory is OK and began to spout off. When the TD chastised him, his cronnies started in threatening Dave. He got me with an ethnic slur that was way out of line. I took offense to the comment, allowed it to control my emotions and lost 11 / 10 to reach the match before the final eight. My fault for the loss but, Joe has caused this kind of trouble at every event I've gone to in Ontario. Why isn't he banned?

I see that Danny uses one of your cues.RJ

At the moment Danny is not using one of my cues. Although we are very good friends and always hang out together, he feels he has too much pressure coming from me when he plays with one of my cues (!?). That's how bad he is with pressure, even now he doesn't want me to look at his matches from too close. But in Kingston, he didn't have any excuse I was still in Montreal!
But I should update my website with the new faces representing my cues, especilly Hsin Huang and Jennifer Chen.

It's true that Martin Daigle is also a very good contestant for the best players in Canada. Martin always performs and he plays a solid game. He offered you 50% off on one of my cues? Knowing him, I'd be curious to know 50% of what? I have a 3 months waiting time right now.

They played with six red balls, open break. Raphael made a red on the break all 3 games and ran out at the beginning, never letting Jonik to the table. :)

Thanks Thierry, I was kinda thinking you might be promoting Danny as tops in Canada considering he was using one of your cues.Don't be concerned about me as I'm just the sceptical type...LOL.

I think John Horsfall has proven himself the most amongst the Canadian players at the International scene with two tourney wins on the pro circuit.Furthermore, unlike Danny he doesn't give up easy and seems to thrive under pressure.

Having said all of this I will say your cues are great and are gaining a good reputation from a few people who have recently bought them here in Vancouver, BC.I had an opportunity to take a few shots with two different Layani cues and they hit and look great. Keep up the good work. RJ

Thierry,

I was kidding about the 50% off. :) I took a good look at the cue you made for Martin. It is fantastic looking, and if Martin's game is any indication, the cue must play very well also!

cheers,
