I am wondering what everyones opinions are on bigger cue tips? I use a 13mm tip myself and have for about 10 years. My playing partner was using a tip that had been turned down to 11.8 from 12.5 and struggled with it. He has since had a new shaft made with a 13.5 mm tip and his control has increased tremendously.

In Jan. issue of Inside Pool, Bobby Pickle was highlighted in the "What's in the Case" section. He's been around for a real long time and has a very impressive tournament record. He uses a tip on his playing cue and break cue that are both 13.5 mm. My question is, why are good players like him choosing to use a bigger tip and the majority of hacks out there using tips that are 12.00 mm and in many cases way under that? Additionally, the reason they're hacks is because they shoot like shit with those small tips.

I kinda agree with Troy,,,with a bigger tip, I play sloppier and sloppier, 'cause I get farther and farther out of the horizontal axis (and get away with it) before I totally screw up,,,
usually, I'll shoot with a snooker cue for a few days to zero myself back in,,,don't have as big a margin or error with a 9.5mm tip,,,FWIW

A larger tip is definitely MORE FORGIVING. Christ...you just said it above. If you get sloppy, that's your fault. A small tip is VERY UNFORGIVING if you hit where you weren't planning to hit and will send the CB off with all kinds of spin.

What ever the reason for shaft size is fine if it's a preference and not made up of misbeliefs. Ask a pro, it is a preference. Ask an amature, well who knows.

Generally speaking a larger tip is more forgiving, but the overall control using extreme english is not the same (spin shots, killing the cue ball on shots, etc).
Why anyone would want to use larger than 13mm tip, I don't know. I shot with 13 mm for years, but have come to prefer 12.75 mm offers a little better control, but I am an experienced player, and it also depends how you shape the top of your tip, plus what kind of tip you use.
Personally, I use a laminated medium hard Hercules tip, and miscues are extremely rare for me, plus on long shots the hit is truer and straighter.
When I get a new tip, I work on it one time (usually to get the 45 degree angle on top side edges), and then after that I only use a Tip Pik on it, and it does just fine.

I personally prefer my tip be 12.87995 millimeters in diameter. I feel that the sub 13mm size gives me the extra spin I need!
