Birds eye shaft

I have a (I'm guessing here) 20 year old McDermott shaft that is made from birds eye maple. It hits great but I've never seen another. Why did they make it and why doesn't anyone else try it?

I don't know why they did it. I wouldn't do it just because in todays standards most players want the shafts as clean and as smooth as possible. Another reason is straight grain maple is much more stable than Birds Eye or Curly.

I have done a few but they're more like "aspiring to be birdseye". The raw is so tight grained and free of dark streaks plus the "tiny eyes" (1.5 mm. max) were mostly on the 8 inch section closes to the joint. It turned out looking good with a BE forearmed cue.

I wouldn't have used it if it were full figured.
