Black Crown Pool Tables - Black Crown i vs Black Crown ii?

Hi guys!

I'm in Canada and so lots more Black Crown available here than Gold Crown (yes I know they are completely different, different manufacturers etc, and that Black Crown is effectively a rip-off of the Gold Crown).

I was actually trying to pull together some research on the Black Crowns but, unlike Gold Crowns, not a lot of info out there!!?!??!!

I was especially hoping to get some details on the V1 and V2 Black Crown differences, and ages (i.e. when the V1 was manufactured, V2 still current).

What is the general opinion here on the Black Crown tables?

Not a bad looking table and I like the cutaway view they have on the site. The pedestal and frame doesn't look near as stout as a Gold Crown.

A buddy has played on them at a Dooly's. He said it played good. Definitely not as stout as a GC or a Diamond but still a quality piece.
 
Looked at some pics and one thing that is different is the 2 has flush mounted pockets.
 
Pockets like garbage cans and inconsistent rails, build quality is suspect to say the least.
Not even in the same ballpark as a Gold crown.
 
Mixed reviews!! :)

I guess they are around half the price new of a Gold Crown, so you have to expect some shortcomings. That said, they do use them in Tournaments, especially in Canada.

Interesting to see people so divided on them!!
 
here's mine, about one month new, room remains a work in progress (garage)

this is an excellent table, nothing better for the money at around half the price of a new Diamond

Considerably ‘cheaper looking’ than a Gold Crown - particularly the aprons and corner castings.

A very good table for the price point, which I seriously considered 25 years ago when opening our poolroom.

I’d rank it roughly equivalent to a commercial model Olhausen Grand Champion 3 or a Brunswick Black Wolf Pro, at a slightly lower price than either.

Hey Canadianguy! Can I ask what price your Black Crown II was brand new? And did it include installation, and Simonis cloth etc?

Here is some info for y'all.

I recently purchased a used Black Crown II that came from a local pool hall that closed down. (about 2 years of play on it. Mint condition),

Just for a hell of it, I filled out a quote request on the Canada Billiard site to see what a 9' one would cost new with Siminos and Super Pro balls.

Quote was $5800 + $870hst = $6670 (Canadian) which is $5402 usd

FWIW, I paid less than half the new price.

Here is a picture of Thorsten Hohmann playing on one at the now defunct local club. Mine has the logos like this one, which I think makes it look more professional. They have a super solid frame, flush pockets and thick slate. I think the ones at the club/mine are the tighter wpa version. Two balls can get wedged in the corner pockets and hover and not fall. Great playing table and far superior to the Black Crown I tables ... which can be had around $1000 used.

These black crowns are all over southern Ontario halls in my area. 9ft tables are at most of our halls in the area. These play nice, with the rails not being as bouncy. Compared them to a diamond and balls roll much less distance.

I prefer gc's and diamonds but no complaints playing on a black crown. I think the bad rep is mostly based on the halls maintenance. I suspect they need maintenance a little sooner than gc and diamonds in a high traffic hall. I have played on some great ones, a played on some crappy ones.

Just take note that the II version is far superior to the I.

There are lots of the old versions around here and they are all showing their age if they were used in a commercial environment. Still play okay, but an inferior design compared to the II.
 
6950.00 installed with simonis, no other accessories, tax in,
toronto area, wait time around 7 weeks

made in Canada if that sort of thing is important to you, not sure where the slate is from

i measured the TDF with a crude ruler at 0.91, this is the bca pocket version, guessing the wpa pocket version plays tougher , as such the table plays easy, game is tough enough to intentionally seek out a difficult playing table for your house

it plays true and pure, rolls straight, banks nicely, I presumed as much from playing on the original version many years ago

no funky hitting rails half way up the table that still find the pocket which we've seen with Rassons and the recent Sam/Predator offering

well worth the money, not the visual showpiece of the top tier tables but close enough, for my needs, especially in my garage and for the $$$, near perfect, when the weather over the years starts to take its toll on the table i wont cringe too much

build quality is likely a step below the top tables although if I took it apart would not be surprised to find it close to equal, parts quality is likely a step down but not by much

in my area at the moment Diamonds and Rassons approach 12-13k Canadian brand new installed, , similar with Joy's top tier chinese 8 ball table which is an absolute monster of a table if you can get one, probably best built table on earth with looks to match

New Gold Crowns are all kinds of expensive, and a good find on a used GC II or III plus refurb starts around 4k but sourcing the table is a pain as is hiring a guy to fix it up, this is a Toronto thing/problem in my opinion

I suspect resale value on this table is next to nothing, but that's most tables around here
