Box cues

I'm a big fan of box cue designs, I really like the clean elegant look. I have two questions for the cuemakers.

1. Most of the box cues I have seen have been very expensive compared to traditional points. Why is this? Are they more difficult/time consuming to build?

2. Why don't more cuemakers build them? Is the demand that low?

Thats a good question. Ive seen a lot of these box cues around the internet and was surprised at the price. I also like that style, so currently Bill McDaniel is making one for me. Its going to be nothing but ebony and ivory with veneered boxes of ivory and a total of about 30 inlays. Heres the good part, its well under 3000. So honestly I think its the people selling them second hand and also the rarity of it that gives it that fat price tag. Im no cuemaker but I would think it would be easier because boxes arent very intricate, but Im sure there is no such thing as an easy cue.

How about some photos gentlemen? Are you referring to the box shaped inlays on the butt sleeve? How about the forearm?

Yes, the inlays are called windows. The style of cue is usually called a box cue, at least I have never heard them referred to by any other name. I just assumed people knew what I was talking about. Tim Scruggs has made a few, McDermott made at least one design, I have seen this style by Richard Black, Bill McDaniel, and a few others.

Anyway, cue makers, what about my questions?

I can't speak for other cue makers but I personally don't like their looks. As far as construction the windows are inlays hence easier to build than traditional half-spliced cues.

I don't like the looks at all. Stroud used to have one of those models in his line years ago and Szamboti made some. Can't see where the cue would present any problems making and don't see why it would command a higher price then a conventional spliced butt unless the windows are ivory or something.
