Here are some aggregate break statistics from the 2024 Jacoby Scottish Open played May 1-5, 2024 at McGoldrick's Pool & Sports Bar in Glasgow, Scotland, with free streaming on YouTube. This was a 104-player 9-Ball event, with double elimination down to 16 players (8 on the winners' side and 8 on the one-loss side) and then single-elimination to the end. Duong Quoc Hoang won the tournament, defeating Oscar Dominguez in the final match.

Commentary was handled by quite a few players. The referees were Julian Roper and Alan Reynolds.

Conditions -- The conditions for these streamed matches included:
• Rasson OX 9-foot table with 4" corner pockets;
• new Simonis 860 Shark Grey cloth;
• Aramith Tournament Black balls with a black-spots cue ball;
• Magic Ball Rack racking template;
• referee racks with the 9-ball on the foot spot (2-ball not necessarily in back location);
• winner breaks from behind the head string in a box approximately 8" to either side of the long string;
• no illegal-break rule, but referees enforce a forceful-break requirement;
• no shot clock;
• foul on all balls;
• 3-foul rule in effect;
• jump cues allowed;
• all slop counts; and
• lag for the break in each match.

These stats are for all 26 matches (378 games) that were played on the feature streaming table (Table 21) with commentary. This was 13.2% of the total of 197 matches played in the event (199 scheduled less 2 forfeits). The races were to 10 on the winners' side and 8 on the losers' side in the double-elimination stage, then to 10 in the single-elimination stage. The 26 matches are listed here in the order in which they were played. The stats are for 371 games instead of 378 because 7 games were lost in whole or part to the stream freezing or to tardy switching of the camera back to the feature table from a view of matches on the other 6 OX pool tables in the room.

Here's a breakdown of the 371 games (for match winners and losers combined).

Breaker made at least one ball and did not foul:
Breaker won the game: 195 (53% of the 371 games)
Breaker lost the game: 93 (25%)
Breaker fouled on the break:
Breaker won the game: 3 (1%)
Breaker lost the game: 21 (6%)
Breaker broke dry (without fouling):
Breaker won the game: 32 (9%)
Breaker lost the game: 27 (7%)
Therefore, whereas the breaker won 62% (230 of 371) of all games,
He won 68% (195 of 288) of the games in which the break was successful (made at least one ball and did not foul).
He won 42% (35 of 83) of the games in which the break was unsuccessful (fouled or dry).

Break-and-run games -- The 113 break-and-run games represented 30% of all 371 games, 49% of the 230 games won by the breaker, and 39% of the 288 games in which the break was successful (made a ball and didn't foul).

The 113 break-and-run games consisted of one 5-pack (by Romppanen), three 4-packs (2 by Gorst and 1 by Duong), five 3-packs (1 each by Boyes, Filler, Van Boening, Shaw, and Dominguez), 13 two-packs, and 55 singles.

9-Balls on the break -- The 113 break-and-run games included 11 game-winning 9-balls on the break (3.0% of all breaks). One additional 9-ball was made on a fouled break, so it was spotted.

Miscellany from the data for the 2024 Jacoby Scottish Open (9-Ball):

• The most balls made on a single break was 4, done just twice, once by Uski (a game win, but not by B&R) and once by Boyes (including a 9-ball).

• The average number of balls made on the break was 1.2 (this includes dry and fouled breaks). On successful breaks (made at least one ball and did not foul), the average was 1.5 and the distribution was 63% 1 ball, 28% 2 balls, and 9% 3 or 4 balls.

• Number of innings:
49% (180 of 371) of the games ended in one inning – 113 games on the breaker's first inning (B&Rs) and 67 games on the non-breaker's first inning.
27% (101 of 371) of the games ended in the second inning.
24% (90 of 371) of the games went beyond the non-breaker's second visit to the table. The game with the most visits to the table ended on the breaker's 9th visit.

• 39% (143 of 371) of the games were run out by the player who was at the table following the break. These run-outs were:
- By the breaker after successful breaks (B&R games) – 39% (113 of 288)
- By the non-breaker after fouls on the break – 67% (16 of 24)
- By the non-breaker after dry breaks – 24% (14 of 59)

• The player who made the first ball after the break:
- Won the game in that same inning 63% of the time (226 of 360)
- Won the game in a later inning 15% of the time (53 of 360)
- Lost the game 23% of the time (81 of 360)
[Note -- total games used here are 360 rather than 371 to eliminate the 11 games in which no ball was made after the break.]

• The loser won an average of 5.2 games in the 21 races to 10 and 3.8 games in the 5 races to 8. Just one of the matches went to hill/hill. The most lopsided matches were two in which the loser won just 2 games.

• The average elapsed times per match were 101 minutes for 20 of the races to 10 and 80 minutes for the 5 races to 8. [One of the races to 10 froze with about 2½ games remaining, so I do not have an elapsed time for that match.] The elapsed time was measured from the lag until the winning ball was made (or conceded), so it includes time for racking and timeouts.

• The match that was both longest in elapsed time, at 152 minutes, and highest in average minutes per game, at 9.0, was Alcaide d. Majid 10-7. The race to 10 that was both shortest in elapsed time, at about 58 minutes, and lowest in minutes per game, at 4.1, was Shaw d. Boyes 10-4. The average minutes per game for all 25 matches for which I have an elapsed time was 6.6.

• Breaking fouls averaged 1 for every 15.5 games, other fouls 1 for every 5.2 games, and missed shots about 1 for every 2.0 games.

• One or more safeties were played in about 40% of all games and in 58% of games that were not B&Rs.
