Any trade offs in converting an old playing cue to a break cue? What would be a good tip/ferrule combo on a regular shaft?

If your ferule is in good condition I don't see any advantage to changing it. Put on a Samarsa break tip and you're good to go.

When I started playing in the league I had a samsara tip put on an old Players cue to use as a break cue. Didn't take very long before the the ferrule cracked, I then had a one piece phenolic tip/ferrule put on. It was better than a house cue for sure.

I liked the samsara tip better, though the phenolic tip was very good also. I eventually took a chunk out of the phenolic tip and broke down and bought a used mezz break cue.

I've tried the Phenolic ferrule on my break cue and it hit hard, but I couldn't jump as well or control the break as well as I can after I installed a Samsara J/B tip. The Samsara tip is the way to go from my experience.

Years ago I played in a place that had a 54" wall cue with one of those slip on tips. It broke better than the cue I'd been using.

So I traded an old cue of mine for a Players jump/break cue and cut 4 inches off the butt. It was one of the best breaker and jumpers I've ever tried.

Sadly, I loaned it to a friend and never got it back...but to this day I prefer a shorter break cue...much better control.
