Just wanted to take a poll on breaking cue weights.
If you can, please provide a reasoning for your vote. :)

Thanks!

My playing cue (viking) is 21 ounces and it feels too heavy when I used to use it to break. My new j/b is 19.5 or thereabouts and feels perfect. It just fits my size (5'8" 165lbs.) perfectly, and I'm pretty strong. Just feels right at that weight.

Mine is 18. I like my break cue to be .5 to 1 oz. lighter than my playing cue. My playing cue is 18.5. I have tried heavier and I have tried lighter and I just seem to be able to control the break (cue ball) a little better with a lighter cue. I am not really sure why, it just seems that way.

Thanks for the input. I've always had the opposite. But then again, I don't ever recall breaking with a lighter cue. I will have to try that out and see the results I will get.

It's kinda like a baseball bat. You can get a lighter bat through the strike zone faster, but it will impart less force on the ball. Larger player who can handle a heavy bat will benefit from one, and smaller players will benefit from a lighter bat that they can get through the zone faster for greater impact on the ball.

My break cue is 19.5, Joss with water buffalo hard tip. works great for me. my playing cue is 19 (Joss w/ 314), and I would rather have my break cue be a bit heavier.

Weight of Breaking Cue

i guess the idea is like that of a baseball bat that is lighter so you can generate speed.

I shoot with a 19 oz. Ditto with my break cue. It's the most comfortable for me, and that's what I strive for.

I think responses to your poll should be
2+oz lighter than playing cue
2oz
1oz
Same weight
1oz heavier
2oz
2+oz

That would give you a slightly better idea about how people like thier break cues. After all if a person says they like a 22oz break cue, one could assume they like a heavier break cue until you realize they play with a 23oz cue.

For the most part that is the way people are answering anyways, but a very good idea.
The cool thing about this is that there is no "right" weight or "wrong" weight - it is whatever works best for you. It is also cool to hear from other players and maybe get an idea that you never thought of before. I just joined azbilliards recently and wish I had long before now. :)

Yeah I should've thought about that. Will have to try that again some time.
Thanks for the advisement!

18

i break with an 18 oz players jump break.i break pretty well with a 19 maybe 20,but in a long session or weekend tourny i like the 18 just for less fatigue.as far as it making a difference in my break,i feel like its all about learning how to swing.i had a bad problem with flying the table i thought it was my aim when it was actually a flaw in my stroke.good swing good break, great swing and watch em put their money away.

I currently break with a 23oz cue and play with a 19.5oz cue.

I'm a pretty lithe guy and I feel like I can get a much stronger break with a heavier cue than I can with a light cue.

17-18

I used to break with anything from 20-22 ounces. One day, I was told that newer players (and players who start heavy and don't like to try anything different) usually break with heavier weight cues and those who are paying attention to the changes in their game will almost always adjust to lighter break cues, as time goes by. I thought the guy was nuts! Turned out, he was right! I won a Sneaky Pete that was 18 ounces and I immediately designated it as my break cue. At first, it was awkward, being so light, but I quickly did better than I ever did before. If I don't have my cues handy and I find anything in the 17 - 18 ounce range, I'm happy.

You have more control when the heavy butt isn't doing the work for you.

If height makes any difference to anyone, I'm 4 ft. 11 inches short.

My regular playing cues are 18-21 ounces.
