I am a 59 year old man love pool my break is really weak because of a few years ago a spinal cord disease hit me and left me with the strength of a 8/10 year old kid any real suggestions from anyone would be appreciated technique/ cue/ books/ tapes/ looking for help thanks

Hi Bill

Glad to hear that you can still play. Good luck.

Now, the break.
I would suggest that you choke up (from perpendicular) on the cue about a full hand length. Accuracy now becomes more important than Velocity. Choking up will give you slightly more speed.

Breaking

Depending on what game you play....

9 ball I would recommend the cut break. Break from the side with a slight cut on the one ball and with a little draw. without breaking hard you can make the wing or the one ball.

8 ball you can break from the side and try 1 of 2 breaks. First is the 8-ball break where you aim to hit the 2nd ball and shoot with draw. without having to break hard you can get a halfway decent spread and a chance of making the 8-ball. Second you can try something I was teaching some other players that have a weak break. You break from the side, but aim for the opposite 1/2 of the lead ball, yes you glance off the lead ball and toward the opposite side rail. With a little bit of draw the cue ball comes off the side rail at about 1.5 to 2 diamonds up and it will come right back through the rack.

Neither of these three breaks require a hard it.

Hi Bill...

Best thing you can do is to find a local "qualified" instructor which will depend on where you live... If you cannot find one local take a few videos and post them to the forum so we can see what you have to work with....

First off I can tell you there are several different techniques for the break and if you are low on the strength part you may be someone who is against the norm and needs a heavy break cue and an elbow raise and drop like Sarah Rousy Klatt... Moving the grip hand forward as suggested is also a good idea as the bicep will be more contracted so it should be both quicker and stronger..... SO much has been learned in the past few years on the break that it's hard to find a place to start without seeing you or knowing how hard you can hit them.....

Another thing you may want to try is if you have a cell phone that is either and Iphone, droid or blackberry there is a breakspeed app that would also help in determining on how to help you... A cut break in 9ball on decent cloth only needs about 17-18mph on the cueball to work.....

I second Randy's suggestion. I'm also 59 and never had a lot of power in my break. When I started to focus on accuracy, I got the results I was looking for.
