Can anyone tell me about Bubunga. Is it from the rosewood family?. Does it make a good cue?.
Thanx,

I core it, the text book says

Bubinga is native to Africa, and is very similar to rosewood. The wood is hard, with a reddish brown color, and lustrous figure. Some of the wood features darker grain striping. Bubinga has good working characteristics, making it a favorite for turning and carving, furniture, veneer, and cabinetry. It has a fine texture and finishes very smoothly, with a lustrous and almost glassy look.

here is a crappy pic shot with a crumby camera. it's the butt of my bubinga cue. this one has a pretty grain pattern. the wood here is a honey, slightly orangy, rich brown.

Bubinga, once dried, doesn't move much... It's not a rosewood, but it's often used as a cheap substitute for tulipwood.

The hit of bubinga is about the same as mexican bocote, hard and dry...

You can use bubinga for all the parts of a cue, without having to core it.

It's turns well, glues well, finishes well...

Tip: bubinga is just sensitive to light. It might darken to the brown side a little over time, so seal it before finishing it.
