Building cues under the influence......

Now I'm not saying I haven't had a few on a day I wanted to get in the zone in my shop but what I mean is with everything thats been written about the art of cue building and the visual stimuli you take in when witnessing some of the mouth watering creations of the masters, how do you move forward in a direction?
I won't name names but a certain cue builder thats been scrutinized for a change in direction still produces some nice looking cues and sells many more than he once did so I would still call him successful even though the value of his work has dropped significantly and his former clients will most likely never forgive him.
I am by no sense of the word an expert in this field and I am humbled by the creations some of you have produced but I'm curious as to what drives the cue builder of today with the advent of CNC.
Do you look at what the mind can create and try your best to duplicate what a few keystrokes can do today using just basic tools and time or do you try and take things to the next level with all the latest equipment?
I'm 50 and get a lot of joy out of my little box of chisels but thats what I enjoy.

I am always sober in my shop, too dangerous otherwise.
Inspiration to move forward comes from within. Cnc is just another tool. I view cnc as the tool that runs itself when set up correctly.However, cnc is just 1 part of the whole.
The real thing is to come up with something new that is uniquely your own.Ofcourse, when some come up with something that is too different, it can take along time to be accepted.

Thanks Neil I don't advocate drinking either, just interested in reading about how CNC has influianced peoples aproaches today. Some people switched over, some haven't but since the posabilities using CNC are almost limitless and have most definitly raised the playing field, for those that have not chosen to pursue CNC has it pushed them to go beyond their limits or attempt to.
I agree establishing a pedigree of sorts is a trick, inovation or a unique look while maintaining traditional values in cue building.
 
Thanks, I don't have cnc, but I am not planing on inlays for my cues.
I prefer laminated woods and what arrives. I am looking at quite a different style of cue and handle, that only a few like.
It suites me at the moment as I am not geared for mass production, and sell most of what I am capable of making.
With cnc there is alot more that can be produced that only cnc will allow you to create, but is not yet being explored by many. When cuemakers get into true 3d modelling then you will see a whole new style of decoration that has not really been aproached.It wil be exciting to see what comes about in the next 10 years,as the new computer only generation take hold of cuemaking.
