Hi all!!
I built this table back in February. And I would have shown it off and made a review of it and the products I bought... but.... I was too lazy to get my account registered when the email registration thing didn't work
TABLE BUILD
I always wanted to build one and found a 20 year old 8' slate sears table that was already disassembled for dirt cheap.
I peeled the veneer off the rails and cut them to make space for the new leatherette pockets (it was bucket type built into the rail). I kept the plywood frame and legs and rail rubber ('L' type).
Then I put a layer of construction spruce-pine over the legs and made new rail skirts, and stained it all with super thick coffee and 2 coats of Minwax 2in1 Bombay Mahogany.
Frame was leveled, then 3 piece slate was thrown on and straightened/matched up perfectly using the 'two strings and some quarters' method. I Bondo-ed together the slate because it was a little rough.
I glued the cloth on (since it had no wood backing) with 3M Super 77. Works well.... gave myself wicked knuckle burn though, should've taped up. I was really surprised at how fast that glue sets, it caught me off guard the first rail.
Pockets I cut to 4.5" with 141-142 degrees and 5" for the sides..... No vertical angle (back draft) because I didn't know about it, it's fine, only had one ball pop out when I shot it breaking spead done the rail... and the shelfs are 2" even Earl wouldn't accuse anyone of missing when the ball goes in on this thing.
I will be removing a half inch of shelf next time I change cloth as it is a little annoying.
Playing surface turned out to be 43.75" x 87.625" and square...... Close enough
The three balls frozen in line on the rail test works from one corner to the other, diamonds too (added after, was busy tearing down wall opposite of wood stove.... yes it does keep your toochie warm. Priorities
)
Cheap Ebay Worsted Cloth
Bought the 'powder blue' from 'gameroomcreations' on Ebay. Its real storefront is Southern Billiards in Georgia. Nice guys.
I think this cloth is okay for the price (about 100US$ for pre cut 8ft shipped. It is definitely NOT 80-90% wool like the description says. Made by 'LeqiTex' and what you actually get is 60% wool. My first time ever playing on worsted cloth so I wouldn't know how it stacks up but i'm happy.
Doesn't stretch much at all when installing and only 2 minor imperfections on the whole cloth (little knots). No regrets now that I got a better ball set. Those cheap balls were leaving burn marks all over. And my GF spilt a half pint of stout on the cloth ..... But you would never know actually. Pretty stain resistant stuff, I make strong stout.
I'll support Simonis for the next time...... I just really didn't want to practice with 400$ :sorry:
Aramith Premium set and Aramith premier snooker set
Worth it! That crisp pop they make when they're clean and bouncing off of each other is addictive and...pretty sweet. Plus they're not leaving (as many) burn marks on my cheap cloth.
A ball return system sort of like a pocket rail for the foot corner pockets is in the works sometime soon. Just gonna cut a hole in the bottom of the leatherette nets and put a rail going between them.
Cheers guys!
