Bushka Designs

Dear all,

Thinking of converting another of my ebony hoppes to a Bushka lookalike, so appreciate anyone who could contribute any rare bushka designs. i already decided to get a bushka ring with a notch MOP diamonds on each points..so the forearm is more or less settled.. But still rackin my brains how the butt should look like..

Thought of just taking the simple way out and do a hoppe butt..but dun think Bushka ever did a hoppe butt before so my Bushka tribute wont look authentic ....

decisions..decisions...decisions...signz..

Raist,

Hi Raist! No, my son Scott is now back home in Cincinnati after serving 4 years, mostly on the USS Carl Vinson, which saw quite a bit of action the last few several years. He's now married and working as a CNC machine operator. Maybe he'll be able to teach Papa some tricks some day! lol

As far as the clear butt styled Bushkas, I don't know if anyone else is doing any, but I have a Bushka Tribute cue in the works now, very similar to the one pictured (it actually has old Bushka parts inside from a broken cue I have) and I have a couple of more in the planning stages. My son has brought me some interesting aluminum parts from work, that look like they would kinda give the "Bushka" style to a cue of this type. I wish I had more old Titlists to convert.

I was just telling my wife that when we make our next trip to the Philippines, we should take a few days in Singapore. She's never been there and I have some fond memories (some I can't share with her! lol) . I wish the old Tigerbaum Gardens (sp?) was still open. I believe it was you that informed me that it was now closed. That was one of the most amazing places I've ever seen! Then there was the Steak house where we ate every day that served the Kobe beef!!! The Cairn Hill Steak House on Cairn Hill road (Sp? again! lol) Mt son was unable to find it when he was in Singapore, I probably have the name wrong because he could not even find the road. lol

I love your city! It's the cleanest, most orderly city, of it's size anywhere! It's a great place to visit! Maybe I'll stay at the Raffles Hotel again! Where the Singapore Sling was invented and several old movies were made!

there I go!

a lot of hot air this time! lol

I just purchased an authenticated (tascarella w/xrays) early 60's Bushka with a ebony hoppe butt.

It has 4 ebony points with 4 veneers. The ebony butt sleeve has a 1/4 inch ivory ring down towards the bottom. These hoppe style cues were made with no rubber bumper (if that helps) Green and white cortland wrap.

I also know someone who is selling a brown version of this cue, but refinished by Ernie @ ginacue w/ brown leather wrap.

I wish I knew how to post pics, but I don't

I want to thank Ken @ high end cues for such a nice transaction. Also picked up a new Gina, the sister to one I already own. He is a pleasure to deal with and he has the NUTS>

Hi Sherm,

the last time we chatted was like 2-3 years? Time flies..Glad things working nicely for u and with luck u be a grandfather soon..hehe
Was hoping u drop by the other time.. The Tiger Balm Gardens has since been taken over by the govt..(after the previous franchise went bankrupt) and is now open free of charge to the public :) .
Cairnhill is still ard, and there are quite a number of japanese steakhouses there and a thriving pub scene now so dunno whether the shop is still there..
u can remember the name?
i getting a ebony titlist build by Jim, and another by Skip. dun think they do those clear plastic style buttsleeve designs..
If i get another hoppe or titlist, hopefully a purpleheart hoppe.. i will definitely get u to those plastic butts.. :)
The Big C got me so i am currently crippled.. but hopefully when i am better i will definitely bring u ard when u come..:)

The pictures are great as well.
Been taking lessons?

Nope, no lessons. Just getting the occasional tip from here and then experimenting. I think the biggest thing was getting some lights so that I didn't have to use the flash! There's still a lot of room for improvement, but I thank you for the compliment all the same.

Oh, Zeed, those awesome pics makes me miss my old Skip cue even more. Hope you'll consider giving me first shot if and when you decide to move it. Sean

Will do! I'm going to be pretty poor for the next year and a half or so while I get school finished so if it comes to me having to get rid of this cue you'll have the first crack at it.

Hey, Sherm - "THAT'S MY CUE"!

Sherm - That is the Balabushaka model that I have owned for 40 years now. I won it for $75 when I was 19 or so. I talked with George many times about it and he was able to make some additional shafts for it. Then Gus started making my shafts for me.
I can't figure this out because George had told me that he had only made 3 cues like this. One for Gordon Guy (here in St. Louis) - One for Fez in NM & One for Junior Goff in AL.
I know Paradise had made many knock-offs of this design.
I brought all this up with John Wright when I had him authenticate my cue and he assured me that mine was a Balabushka although I knew it was as I have all the mailing tubes and labels also along with about 17 shafts.
Did you maybe get this from Junior or Fez?

You wouldn't believe the standing offer ($) I have on my cue.

Tom,
No I got the cue from John Wright in trade for a Szamboti. When I got it, it had 2 original shafts and 3 made by Doc Frey. I also had a letter from John and a letter from Doc Frey with as authentication. I'd also heard that there were only 3 made, the one I had, Cicero Murphy's cue and another. Many years ago I bought out a cuemaker here in Cincinnati who had lots of old broken cues and parts. Among them was a severely broken Titlist Bushka. I'm not sure what happened to the forearm, but it was destroyed anyway. I am using the bottom parts with a Titlist to make a tribute cue. Should have been done by now but I keep getting sidetracked!
I remember re-tipping 4 or 5 shafts for your Bushka many years ago at Beechmont Billiards in Cincinnati. You made a small score off of one of the biggest nits in Cincinnati that day! First playing gin then pool. He thought he'd get his money back playing pool! LOL The guy you beat was famous locally for hustling kids, drunks and people who just had no chance! I remember the look in his eyes when he realized he was in a bear trap! LOL That was great!

Sherm – “Now I remember you”!
That was a funny hustle I was able to put on Balcamino.
I REALLY WAS IN TOWN TO GET MY ADVERTISING BIZ STARTED (been in biz for 15 years now) and Gary Speath was steering me.
He had told me to just go around to some weekly local bar tourneys and I could clean up. I tried to explain to Gary how I hustled but I could see it was falling on deaf ears. He really wasn’t into the hustle – just liked to play good – AND HE DID. I asked him to just tell me where the action & $ was and I'll take it from there.
I wasn't really trying to even hustle any pool and was just sitting in the bar area having a beer when Balcamino starts hustling me to play Gin. Naturally I turned him down and waited for him to play someone else and watched him play a few hands. He didn't know what the hell he was doing!
I actually had to come & go from St. Louis a couple of times to get & train a good new rep for my product and so it looked even better.
I'll bet I played Balcamino over 15 sets of Gin and he never won once. He insisted we don't tell anyone what we were really playing for (it sure was a lot more than others thought) & Gary had told me I was wasting my time on him because he was the biggest lock artist & nit in OH.
After Balcamino had all he could stand at Gin (& I thought he was going to have a heart attack) - What do you think he says - "Do You Ever Play Pool For Money"?
I remember playing some decent player (I think Balcamino was staking him) and losing $100 or so. I did this to be able to establish that I had a cue so when I played serious later it wouldn’t be so alarming.
Did you know Balcamino & I played pool more than a couple of times - but never in that Pool Room?
I've often thought that if I played Golf - I could have had the trifecta with Balcamino.

Gary almost shit when he got his 20% & he must have laughed for 10 min. He couldn’t believe it! One of the hardest parts was keeping Gary out of the poolroom. After he had heard what was going on, he wanted to come in and see for himself and I didn’t want him to screw anything up.

TY & GL

Ps. - Is Balcamino still around? - If so, Say "Hello" for me. I really did like him.
And what about that guy who ran a coffee/trucker’s stop years earlier out on the interstate. Man, he sure had some nice waitresses.
