BUTT Taper question?

For the AVERAGE cue butt....Is it safe to say that a butt measuring 1.25" tapering to .80" and 28" long would be a good average as far as the degree of TAPER is concerned? THANKS MUCH in advance!!

Most production cues are about .840"-850" at the joint collar and 1.240"-1.250" at the buttcap, with a straight taper. If you ask about custom cues, you'll find more variation, also in the taper, Southwest might be the best known example.

I have measured cues from 1.32 - .80, to 1.22 - .87 and everything in between. As stated above most fall in that .84 -.85 and 1.24 - 1.25 range.

Got my own theories and am not a major cue maker. Got old about the time i started making a few cues again, so don't do it commercially. (sell them, but do not take orders or give out schedules). It interferes with skiing in the winter and playing with airplanes in the summer. :)

My 29" to 30" FS/no wrap cue butts tend to have a very gradual taper along the handle, then a parabolic taper forearm to a .870 to .875 joint.
I prefer the stability of a larger dia, G10 big pin joint. If you use metal joint ferules then smaller is not a problem. And of course most i know trend toward .840 whatever the joint style, so it obviously works fine.
