I have hit with many of different cues over the years. SS joints, wood on wood, ect. The best hitting cue i ever hit was a Gus Z. And what i remember the most is the sound it made when i made contact with the cue ball. A click.
Also some of the older TS,JW ect have that sound too. It seems that alot of the newer cues i hit with today are great but really dont have that sound.
Im going to order a cue in the next few days. My question is, what can i do when talking to a maker to assure that i can get that style of hit. And what is it in the way that they were made that gives this sound? My ideal cue would be the firmness of a SW with the sound of a older SS jointed cue i talked about above. Any help would be great THXS

I have heard some people talk about this and my 2 cents is its the quality of the wood. The old growth wood is getting harder to find, and thats why im thinking maybe a converstion.

Looser piloted stainless joints and ivory ferrules with hard tip help get that sound. Some also bottom the wrap joint pin with sharp point into the bottom of the hole on one side of that joint. That increases the tone to the cue. All these things actually take away from the cues performance in my opinion but if you like that noise that is how to get it. Some also put the ivory ferrules on with no glue relief hole and this traps air under the ferrule cap and helps get the noise started. But it also makes it much more likely to crack. If you want me to recommend a cuemaker that I have seen some of his cues that have that sounds is: Jimmy Reeves. He likes that sound also and builds it into many of his cues. I know people who love that sound but for me I don't care for it. I guess that is why there are so many cuemakers. If I like it there will also be someone else that will also.
