Buying Another American Heritage

SlateMate

well, a local advertised a "Brunswick" pool table for sale but it turned to be an American Heritage almost identical to the table i just sold. that deal worked out very well because i sold the pool cues that came with the table for what i paid for the table ($75.00) and then i sold it for $600.00 after some guy reneged on his $100.00 deposit. so i made $600.00 despite the fact that i put cloth on it. this new table that i just looked at is the same thing i had except it has 'fancy' claw feet. we agreed on $125.00 so i can't really lose and it will tide me over until i get a better table.

My AH played very well however BUT that "magna board" was not holding the slate screws and after just a few weeks a couple began inching out. i knew that it was going to be a problem because all of the holes stripped-out upon assembly so i gooped them up with wood shim pieces and carpenters glue. most held but some did not.

so my question is: what's the best way to modify the magnaboard so that the slate screws hold fast? i thought about drilling them out and putting in dowels but there must be a faster way.

ok, never mind... i'll just use machine screws.

The fastest way is not always the best way.

Regardless, you could drill out the Magnaboard and use flat head cap screws with washers and nuts.

Also, make sure that you level the Magnaboard, before you place the slate on it. You will likely need to shim it up from the frame quite a bit. This will also require the use of longer screws.
