Call shot 10 ball, rule question

Can someone clarify the rules for call shot 10 ball? Particularly the version where the incoming player has the option to take the shot, or give the shot back to the player that called a shot and missed.

A few misc. questions....

-If you call safe and a ball goes down, does it stay down or spot?
-If you call a ball and make it and other balls go down, do they stay down, or spot? If they spot, is it after your inning or immediately?
-If you call a ball and miss, but other balls go down....I assume they spot?

Thanks for any clarification.

Under WSR and BCAPL:

Only the 10 spots...other balls never.

Incoming player has option in first and third examples only (illegally pocketed balls apply). In second example there are no illgally pocketed balls, but the 10 still spots and shooter continues.

Thank you.

However, in the 1st example, you say that an incoming player has the option to give the shot back to the last player? I thought that if you call safe, then the incoming player has to shoot?

Doug:

In the first example -- and no matter if the WPA or WPA+ rules are in use -- a called safety that results in a pocketed ball is option to the incoming shooter.

It's only in the case of a missed called shot (when no balls were pocketed), where the WPA and WPA+ rulesets differ. In the former, the incoming player has to accept the table as-is. In the latter, the incoming player has option.

I hope that helps,

BIG RULE OF THUMB: Basically you shoot until you MISS the called shots.

- You miss - you lose your turn.
- You call safe - you lose your turn.
- You slop - it's consider a miss since you didn't make it into called pocket or called balls. So you lose your turn.
*** However, on coming player has option to shoot or pass it back if any ball is slopped after a legal shot. So, your opponent slop and gets perfect shape on the next ball - you're supposed to take the table and if your opponent dead hooks you after a slop shot - pass it back to 'slopper'.

If it was 10 Ball is ever slopped after a legal shop, then 10 spots back on the table immediately, but any balls 1-9 will stay down.

TWO WAY SHOT: Some people confuse thinking they cannot shoot two way shot - Yes, you can. Two way shot is when if you miss, you leave your opponent safe. So go to BIG RULE OF THUMB - You miss and leave your opponent safe, you lose your turn cause you missed.

Hope this helps

One minor thing; some tours (e.g. the Tony Robles' Predator tour), a missed shot is option to the incoming player:

7. Call Shot/Safety:

Call Shot:
Players have the option of either calling their shot or calling a safety. Aside from obvious shots, the shooter must specify which ball and which pocket is being called. If a player is shooting a bank, combination or any kind of ambiguous shot, the player must call the shot.

If a player calls a shot and misses, the incoming player will have the option to shoot or make his opponent shoot again. No matter how many times a player misses a called shot, failure to pocket that ball legally or wrongfully pocketing the ball in another pocket allows the opposing player the option to shoot or make his opponent shoot again.

Call Safety:
If a player calls a safety, the incoming player does not have the option to make his opponent shoot again. The only exception is when a player calls safe and pockets a ball. If a player calls safe, legally hits the object ball and thereafter pockets any ball in their safety attempt, the opposing player has the option to shoot or make their opponent shoot again.
[...]

Many folks call these rules the "WPA+" rules, because they are essentially the WPA rules with this one modification added.

Just FYI,

Oh, thanks for the info. Yes, my examples are based on WPA rules. ;)

Thanks Sean, that makes sense. I tend to like the WPA + version better.

I haven't played 10 Ball a ton and have a couple questions.

Is there any point in WPA rules to declare safe? I don't think I see one.

What's the reasoning that neither WPA or WPA+ allows for the option to play a pocket safety?

First question...you think (or is it don't think?) correctly. There is no point whatsoever. Don't break your brain anymore trying to figure it out...I've bee breaking mine for four years, ever since the WPA version came out and trust me - there is no reason at all.

Can't answer the second question. But I'm sure others will offer many reasons.
