This is not always the case. Around 1910, a Mr. Kettering invented the automobile self starter and it was first used in a Cadillac. He then franchised the technology to other auto man.. Henry Ford refused to pay these fees and used the technology to put self starters on Ford products. Delco, who was the company that Kettering was associated with, sued Ford for Patent infringement. This suit stayed in the courts for many years and both companies spent millions of dollars in legal fees. When all was said and done, Delco won the suit and Ford had to pay Delco for the infringement for all of the years the patent had been in place. The award was one dollar.
