Canada Billiards Black Crown

Hi all, this is my first post on this site and I have become addicted to billiards I had a Chinese table for a couple of years (8 foot) and after playing on 9 footers at pool halls, began resenting my old table. I bought a Black Crown (as Diamonds are hard to come by in Ontario and Gold Crowns would have been a long wait). I ordered a Black Crown which is advertised as a solid commercial/tournament table. A lot of pool halls in Ontario have these in their inventory. I love the way it plays BUT am upset about the pocket size :( The website states that the pockets comply with BCA specs but the pockets are approx. 5 inches. My understanding is that BCA has adopted WPA standards for tournament tables and pockets should be 4.5 inches. Any input would be appreciated as I am not nearly as experienced as many of the people on this site. I want to approach the manufacturer for a solution. Here is link for the table:

Junkie,

We had several of those tables in a room here in Rochester. Properly set up, they played just fine. My guess is, have a qualified table mechanic take the rails off. Insert a set of correctly sized pocket liners and play some pool. An alternative is to have the rails lengthened and install new rail rubbers. Seems to me the pocket inserts are the best option. Incidentally, one of the rooms I play in has 12 GC V Tournament Edition tables. From the factory, the pocket openings measured 5.25 inches!

Thanks Lyn! I have never heard of pocket liners but will investigate. I keep hearing the terminology 'having the table properly setup'. As far as I know (based on my limited knowledge), that means level but what else should I look for when mechanic sets up a table?

When the tables were first delivered, they had Gandy disease. The rails were mounted at the incorrect height and the balls would "hop" of the rubbers. Regardless of how hard they were struck. Once corrected, they played just fine. Don't remember the size of the pocket openings. Guess some people refer to liners as "shims". Your mechanic will understand once you tell him the pocket openings are too large and you want them reduced. Table set up is much more than making sure the playing surface is level. The table has three slates. If incorrectly assembled, balls will "hop" over the joints. The rails when correctly set up will be straight from end pocket to end pocket across the side pocket. If the cloth is not properly tightened, you will get "rolls" of cloth on the table. Worse, the table will play very slow even when the cloth is dried out. If the rails are not correct, the pocket openings will not be symmetrical. Take the time and have a good mechanic make your table as perfect as YOU want it.

Good luck and good play.

Thanks! I will check all those things. One big thing that was of concern was the mechanic did not use wax (or anything for that matter) to ensure the slate pieces were joined together. He said on a first setup, it is not necessary. I don't notice any hopping and have been on the table with my son (10 year old shark) for many hours since delivery earlier this month. I will check those other items out but appreciate the time you are taking to help me.

If you are in Ontario call DB custom cues in Milton. He can set you up with whatever you want (Diamond, GC, Blackcrown) and fit the pockets to your liking.

Thanks JD_Hogg, I wish I had joined this site earlier. I bought my new Black Crown earlier this month. I didn't know about DB Custom Cues and that he could find Diamonds/Gold Crowns. I wish I had stumbled upon this site earlier.... Buyer's remorse setting in... :(

Nothing wrong with a black crown. If you want the pockets resized you can contact DB.
