Captaining an 8-Ball APA Team

Does anyone have a copy of the book How to Be the Captain of a Winning APA 8-ball Team by John Loftus that I could buy? I checked Amazon and BN and it appears to be out of print right now.

The captain of my 8-ball team is fairly new to pool, and even newer to captaining and strategizing. But he does show promise, so I'd like to get him this book for a starting point on thinking through the dynamics of APA team play.

I checked this forum for some threads and found a nice one regarding playoffs strategy (http://forums.azbilliards.com/showthread.php?t=264159). But I'm wanting to find something addressing regular season play.

Thanks,
Sam

I have the book lying around somewhere the strategies are widely known. and can be summed up in about 1 paragraph. I wouldn't waste money on that crap. Let him learn by trial by fire the lessons will be deeper and stick better t

Why dont you undermine him constantly until he quits and then take the captain spot for yourself?

Unlike your suggestion, the original poster doesn't seem to be complaining about his captain and only wants to support him.

Okay, heres my winning strategy which is way more helpful then that book . 1. Phase one is build a well rounded team. something like 6,6,5,5,4,4,3,2 which is also suggested in the book. 2. Phase 2 is throwing for 3 wins everytime . and 4 against really weak teams. i do this by attempting to duck their big dogs whilr simultaneously attacking their weak players. i also ussually volunteer to throw first so i can control the last 2 games. 3. Phase 3 is handicap manipulation. I don't sandbag or coach anyone to but what i do do is take detailed notes of my own players weaknesses if i. feel like someone is about to move up or has moved up i take a look at my notes and see if they got any weird weaknesses if they shoot crappy drunk then I will start throwing them drunk. if they play bad against girls then i will start throwing them against girls. so on and so on you get the ideal. 4. Phase 4 is taking an excruciating amount of your opponents habits and taking advantage of every single number available on the APA site. I also read the art of war atleast once a week which helps memore then words can express . once your team no longer has the winning combination then hand over the team to your co captain and start another one from scratch .

One thing not mentioned in the post you linked to is handndicap manipulation . I highly reccomend it. If you have a 4 that plays like a 5 then throw him enough when he's drunk to keep his handicap down also you can pay attention to little things like if he plays bad against girls and put him in those situations so he wll stay a 4 for a while.

Right now my team consists of a high 6 a medium 5, 2 4s that play like 5s two 3s that play like 4s a legitimate 3 and another 3 that i am about to have knocked down to a 2 even when we get to states and have a few handicaps moved up we will still be underhandicapped enough to be a real force.

If you don't find a copy of the book, you can ask general and/or specific questions here. Once you learn how to ignore those who hate the APA and feel the need to trumpet it in every related thread that appears, you will find a bunch of folks here that are very helpful. With years and years of experience. From different parts of the country, which is very helpful, since all territories are not necessarily run the same....

There are Vegas winners, plenty of team captains and even a few LO's that participate regularly. You can learn a lot here.

I've only been a captain for a year now, so I'm not the voice of experience. But we all see things and can share opinions, and what has worked for us in the past.

A friend saw this thread and said, "Wow! A new book is needed. I'll call it, Sandbagging for Dummies!"

He made me laugh with a comment yesterday as well, when he said, "Humans are too stupid to see how stupid we are!"
