Did it hurt or help your pool game?

I've been diagnosed with severe carpal tunnel syndrome in my right hand and to a much lesser degree in my left. Probably only have the surgery done on my right but am wondering if I'll be able to play pool afterward.

Best thing I ever done...I kept putting it off till i couldn't sleep at night. Don't know why i waited so long. Instant Relief. Mine was done micoscopicly, recovery was short!!!!

Thanks! That's great to hear and I hope I am as fortunate. I do not know yet what method the doctor will use but it's more than a little worrisome. Sometimes the pain is just too much but I would hold off longer if it meant no pool afterward.

I think you will do just fine!!!! I'am sure it will mean no pool for a little while...but trust me the trade off is well worth it. no more pain shooting up the arm and in the elbow and no more hands going to sleep!!!

it depends

Mine was very severe, but also on and off as I treated it with acupuncture with success. I finally gave in and had the surgery after I aggravated it lifting some slate of all things.
There are many things that were hard to do with my left hand while I was recovering. I was shooting pool pretty quickly, but did lay off the break for a while.
Like you, it was much worse in my right hand. I had surgery on the right and found that my left was worse than I thought. As you use your left while in recovery, you may find the same.
We all recover differently, but I am sure you'll be glad you did this.
Good luck!

I have this. If I spend a day planing cues I can't sleep. I am terrified to get the surgery. Am glad to read the good stories.

Nerves

You need to get the surgery. The nerve doesn't just cause numbness etc. It also tells the hands to heal- grow etc. By not acting the damage can become permanent.

I had it back in the early '80's before the medical profession knew what it was or had a name for it (i.e. CTS). I was on a computer keyboard non-stop.

Knowing what I know now... I would IMMEDIATELY go for the surgery if it is the simple procedure I see advertized where they slit the sheath surrounding the nerve in the wrist (it's outpatient I think?). The sheath is what is inflamed and causing the pressure on the radial nerve. However, if your doctor suggests moving nerves around in the upper part of your arm... I would definately get more opinions.

I had exploratory surgery at the elbow (I had a lot of pain there and in the wrist). Anyway, the nuerosurgon opened me up, took a look and closed me back up... he really didn't know what to do. I just suffered through it and it finally went away... this doesn't happen for everyone.

The longer you wait, the more pain, problems and permanent damage you'll incur.

WOW! Who cares about playing pool at this point... GET YOUR ARM/WRIST TAKEN CARE OF!

I care about playing pool at any point. It's still one of the very few things that I love to do. I'm going to get the surgery, but if I thought the risk was too high so far as my pool playing, I would put it off as long as possible.

After a lot of research online, it seems the outcome is very positive about 93% of the time. That's pretty good odds.

I suffered from cubital tunnel syndrome last year. Not quite the same but I think the quicker you get help (surgery if necesarry) the better. After surgery I couldn't work for 3 months and I had to do some special exercises. I took the doctors advice verry seriously and I still avoid lifting heavy things. I'm verry happy I got rid of that numb feeling in my fingers that drove me insane at times and most important I can play pool just like before. I hope you recover as well as I did. Good luck to you.

Mine was severe in both hands I'm a charter fishing guide and had full use of both hands before the stitches were removed ask around and pick your surgeon with care. You will not want to break a rack for a few days tho. Instant relief I had both hands done at the same time.

I work as an orthopedic physical therapist and see people for the rehab of this surgery fairly often. The surgery is a very simple procedure that takes the Dr. about 4 minutes to perform. In general the rehab is fairly simple and the surgery is generally quite successful. Most people recover fairly quickly, although some soreness in the area of the incision and the palm just down from that can persist for a few months.

Whenever nerves are involved, the level of recovery can not be certain. While many people make a full or near full recovery, their can be some left over symptoms that never go away. Obviously you won't know until after the surgery.

While the level of recovery can vary, I don't think I have ever had anyone come out worse after the surgery, and any improvement you get should benefit your pool game.

Good luck!
