When are Canadian Pool League players going to stand up and state "We're as mad as hell and we're not going to take this anymore" The league operators and tournament organizers for the recently held CCS Canadian Championship at the Delta Meadowvale hotel in Mississauga, Ontario need to reconsider the organization of this annual tournament. There were numerous blatant errors in the setup of the tournament. There was no direct lighting over any of the tournament tables and the only light was from ceiling pot lights that had energy saving CFL bulbs installed at least 15 feet above the tables leaving dark areas especially at the table ends. In some areas towards the perimeter of the room there were fewer ceiling pots making it even darker. The CFLs at least could have been replaced with halogen floods giving better lighting over the tables. The tables were open which was an improvement instead of having to feed the coin mechanism $1.50 for every game. So my question is because of the open tables, why not use a proper cue ball without the magnetic insert which tends to make it unbalanced and roll not true especially when it is coming to a stop. There were tables installed in the hallways next to large windows with no shades making it very difficult to see when playing a shot in the direction of the windows with direct sunlight shinning into the players eyes. One of the rooms off the main room was set up with old Valley coin operated tables that were not in very good condition. The balls used on these tables were of varying compositions of very old dull heavy balls and newer shiny lighter balls making it difficult to play consistent position. All the cue balls used in this room were very heavy and discolored and nothing even close to what was being used in the main room and hallway. When I asked why the equipment in this room was so different from the main room, I was told that a different supplier installed these tables. I was then told it is the same for both teams to have to use this sub standard equipment which was an inappropriate response considering that this is supposed to be the Canadian Amateur Championship. What a poor excuse from the organizers that they had no control of what the other vendor installed in this room. You would think that the organizer would stipulate the condition of the tables and at least have matched balls and proper cue balls.
There needs to be some time limit on the matches to keep everything running as close to scheduled times as possible. My team waited over 3 hours past the scheduled match time for the final because the matches on the B side were taking too long.
Quite a few players that I spoke to said that they would not enter this tournament as they didn't think the prize payouts were enough compared to the amount collected from entry fees. As long as Pool Players are complacent with the inadequate playing conditions provided and the prize payouts, the organizers are going to continue to take advantage. We need to boycott these events with the sub standard playing conditions and affect their bottom line and maybe then we will get some positive results.
