Championship Mercury

Looking at using Championship Mercury for redoing the 8 foot table at the local Senior Center. They also sell the Championship Mercury Ultra, costs about another $11. Seems the only difference is that the latter is teflon impregnated, so better at resisting spills and stains. Anyone have any experience with that? Is it worth the extra for the teflon? Also, recommendation on rails. Seybert's sells Pool God, seems to be their top of the line. Recommendations there?

Thanks everyone.

My mercury ultra is ready to be replaced.. I had it put on before years of intensive daily practice.. 12 years ago.. pretty durable stuff...

The Mercury Ultra with Teflon is called Championship Valley Teflon. Same exact cloth as Ultra, just the thread is treated with Teflon before the cloth is woven.

We had the roof leak at our American Legion post. Soaked half the table. We managed to save it, but it left a semi noticeable stain. If we had the Valley Teflon, we wouldn't have had a stain. It is now my go-to cloth especially for a commercial environment. You will not see a playability difference between the two.

For the extra $9.00 (at Seyberts), just get it. You won't regret it, especially after chit happens.

Thanks. That is where I am headed as well. We are looking at one of the tables at our VFW post as well, so we’ll probably go with that as well there.

Don’t know about you Legion guys, but if they ask nicely I’d probably cave and do theirs too.

Brother and I donate our time to recover and repair the tables at the AmVets and the American Legion. All they pay is the actual cost of the cloth. We don't make a dime. It's a very small price to pay compared to what the veterans paid.

Glad to hear that. I am doing cost of cloth and bumpers only. All the small stuff— tips for recuing, glue, shims, bees wax, occasional hardware and the like is not worth worrying about. I’m retired Navy myself, but had a pretty easy time compared to some of the guys coming back from the Middle East, so don’t mind a bit.

Did it play similar to Simonis over the time period, or did it get slicker and fuzzier like the non-woven type cloths?

Do you know if there was a speed difference with the teflon added in? I heard from someone that it made the cloth quite a bit faster, to the point of being annoying to play on.

it didn't get slicker it got slower might take a second decade before its threadbare slick.. but after the first decade the pilling started to become a problem..though I probably cleaned it too often... I paid like $250 to have it recovered in I think it was 2007 right before I entered the "become a real pool player" tunnel.. and it hung in there pretty well from straight line burn in to jump practice.. I put it through its paces and can honestly say I like mercury ultra, brand new it plays as well as anything, it wears like iron, and even shot to shit, a decent player can get reasonably expected results..

Thanks to everyone for their help and suggestions. Here’s the latest fly in the ointment:

The table measures (bumper edge to bumper edge) 46 inches by 92 inches, so is two inches wider and four inches longer than the 44x88 table I have at home. I believe this should be considered a 4 x 8 standard. I’ve talked with the supplier and Championship, both of whom told me this is a 4 x 8 oversized, and that I need to be ordering cloth for a 9 foot table and cutting it down. Don’t mind the work so much, but it will add some cost for purchase.

So relying on the experience of some of you out there who do this for a living, what size cloth should I tell them to order, 8 or 9 foot?

As always, thanks in advance for the help.
