I was wondering if it is possible to change the joint on my cue from steel to phenolic. Also how big of a difference would it make in the balance point? Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Yes you can and it would move the balance point back somewhat....

Yes, the joint can be changed out fairly easy. It will cause several things to happen, it will move the balance point back pretty far, as welll as make the cue weigh less. The weight and balance can be over come with a longer joint pin. The butt screw may have to be changed. Keep in mind if the shaft has an insert, it will have to be removed, and the shaft will have to be pluged and bored out and threads ground or taped to receive the new pin. I prefer to grind the threads, much cleaner and dead on.

OVER VIEW!
1.- Plug, bore, grind or tap thraeds for the cues joint, be sure to install the new joint, before you bore for pluging. Doing this will keep the joint wood from spliting when being drilled or taped.

2.- Plug, bore, tap, or grind threads for the shaft.

3.- Install a shorter or lighter in weight butt screw.

4.- Machine in the shaft and joint for a good fit, then refinish.

You should check the balance point, as well as the weight, before you start. If your planning on your cuemaker, doing this work, be sure to pass on to him the weight and balance points. Meassure from the butt of the cue to the balance point and mark with a small piece of tape.

Cost depends on how much of the cue needs to be painted.
The conversion without paint should run about, $150.00....
