Chipped Ivory Ferrule

I have a Bill McDaniel with an ivory ferrule that has cracked and almost chipped off under the tip. The spot is about a quarter of the size of a tic-tac goes down the ferrule about the width of a credit card.

Would it be ok to put it on a lathe and just take the top off of the ferrule; with some of the tennon? Has there been more damage done, that I can't see on the inside? Has it weakened the ferrule? Should I just buy some new ivory?

How much would the "hit" change with that little of an amount taken off?
 
There was no fiber pad placed under the tip. The guy that had it broke with it a lot and mushroomed the tip and continued to play with the cue. This is what caused the chip. I can't post pics yet, but will try when I'm able. What type of pad should be used to fix the problem from happening again?

BTW, you'll probably find the ferrule is capped so by removing .06" it's pretty unlikely anything but Ivory will be coming off. Hopefully the ferrule hasn't been faced off several times already.

I have no idea how thick McDaniel makes the cap on his Ivory ferrules, but if you can find out, you should be able to figure out how much of the cap is left now and how much would be left if .06" or so was removed. Obviously not good if it's getting too thin. I personally don't work with Ivory, so I couldn't tell you what the minimum acceptable thickness would be.

Just got a new ivory ferrule and tip to put on instead of cutting down the old one. Thanks for the comments, EightBallJunkie.
